A sub devoted to highlighting the ridiculous cost of living in Canada right now. We’d like to thank our corporate overlord Galen Weston Jr. of Loblaws for continually raising grocery prices so he can get a big fat bonus cheque every year while the rest of Canadians struggle to make ends meet.

The Best Made in Canada House brand?

Overall, Compliments takes the win for having the highest percentage at 53% of items being made in Canada while Save-On-Foods’ Western family takes a close second with 47% being either made in Canada or Product of Canada.

The President’s Choice and No Name are still decent options when looking for Canadian made or Canadian prepared options and they likely have quite a few items that could be identified as made in Canada and product of Canada, but at this point that information simply isn’t being shared either because of a lack of organization or a deliberate attempt to provide vague information.

With the help of the store's produce manager, Innis decided to wean Urban Grocer off U.S. produce. By Monday (March 17), all of the store's American produce will be replaced with alternatives from Canada and places farther afield, like Morocco, Argentina, Mexico, Japan and Europe.

“I'm very proud of that team for what they've accomplished in such a short order,” said Innis. “As a result of that, we're getting really good feedback from our customers.”

To avoid raising prices, Urban Grocer has absorbed the extra cost incurred as a result of ordering produce from countries farther away than the U.S. It is now seeing less profit per item sold, but the general manager explained the store is making more money, as it has seen an uptick in customers since steering clear of U.S. produce.

Don't let up on the boycott. The local grocers and farmer's markets are way better for keeping the money in the country. Galen Weston has a castle outside the country being funded by your hard-earned dollars.
