Sopuli was today down for several hours. I rescaled Hetzner's VPS with one more CPU core, so it now has a triple-core (virtual) CPU in total. This was done both to prepare for the next week and because of the cheap price. Making this small upgrade added only 2 € to total server costs. Let me know if you see any performance boosts.

Sopuli oli tänään alhaalla muutaman tunnin. Skaalasin Hetznerin virtuaalipalvelinta isommaksi lisäten yhden prosessoriytimen lisää, joten siinä on nyt kolmiytiminen (virtuaalinen) prosessori. Tämä tehtiin sekä ensi viikon että halvan hinnan takia. Tämä pieni päivitys lisäsi vain 2 € palvelimen kokonaiskustannuksiin. Kertokaa jos huomaatte suorituskyvyn parantuneen.

this is kinda a test post/help request/bug report

I tried to post an image to [email protected], which is then uploaded to the local instance (sopuli). link itself is working, but the preview/thumbnail in the post isn't showing up and the image isn't accessible that way.

I tried through Jerboa and now through the web frontend, but no luck either.

edit: ok, at least for me the image doesn't show either. is this just me or anyone else having the same issue?

edit 2: I've made a successful test of an image post, that wasn't created with my Pixel 7 Pro and that one shows without issue

I guess, I'm hitting a limit somewhere or maybe some meta data causes a hiccup. size wise the images aren't really big (1.5MB, 1.8MB). so, not really sure what the issue could be

edit 3: well, I've tried 'Scrambled EXIF' and 'Exif Eraser' and at least that didn't change a thing. when I let the image through Signal, where AFAIK EXIF data gets removed and also done compression is done, I can post the image.

edit 4: to verify it's the file size, I tried now with a downloaded hd picture (3.5MB) and that one doesn't show either. here is the test post: https://sopuli.xyz/post/640216
maybe it's not even a limit on the file size, but a transmission timeout?

I think this is currently the end of my testing, as I can't think of much more test cases.

edit 5: nope, large picture just took more time and shows correctly bitte. must be something with the Pixel 7 Pro

There's discussion on pineapplemachine's instance about the questionable moderating practices on Lemmy.ml

I joined sopuli especifically due to not wanting to associate with that kind of practices as I really believe there should be a minimum freedom to criticise any government's actions. Is my belief compatible with this instance or should I think about self hosting?

So far I'm liking it here a lot.

Just came across this. If you get a language not allowed error in the app when trying to post, it could be a mismatch between the language in the user profile and the community language. I discovered this while trying to comment on a community I am a mod in and kept getting denied (my profile language remains 'undefined' and the community had English selected only - guess I got overzealous).

My takeaway from this is to keep the 'undefined' language tag in communities just to be on the safe side.

Tried uploading a JPEG avatar and seem to be getting this error: Request error: error sending request for url (http://localhost:8080/image): error trying to connect: tcp connect error: Address not available (os error 99)

Is this intentional or a bug? Seems some users on the instance have avatars while many don't.

Well, whew again! The influx of new users into Sopuli surprised not only me, but also Hetzner's VPS. The disk space ran out fast, and Sopuli was down today for many hours because of this. I was busy with work, which didn't help with the issue.

I bought extra disk space from Hetzner, and the founder of brand new Lemmy instance https://lemmy.world [email protected] helped to use it on the VPS. Really big thanks for him! Apologies to both new and old users, hopefully this will not happen again. Happy weekend, everyone!

Edit 03.06.2023: Now there is 80 GB of extra disk space for Sopuli, apparently 40 wasn't enough. In addition to extra space I also bought peace of mind. Sopuli was again offline but no more!

Well, whew! As a result of Reddit's recent spark of genius, the number of users looking for a new home has been growing at quite a brisk pace. In the last 12 hours, over 30 new membership applications were received. This has never happened before in Sopuli's short history. It's a bit like what happened to Mastodon when Twitter had its own spark of genius. I'm surprised and also excited.

Anyway, welcome to new users! Feel free to check out Sopuli and Lemmy in general. If you have any questions, you should first check FAQ if the question has already been answered. No huh huh! Redditin viimeaikaisten neronleimauksien seurauksena uutta kotia etsiviä käyttäjiä on tullut varsin reippaalla tahdilla. Viimeisen 12 tunnin aikana tuli yli 30 uutta käyttäjähakemusta. Tällaista ei ole Sopulin lyhyen historian aikana tapahtunut aiemmin. Tämä on vähän sama asia kuin mitä vuorostaan Mastodonille kävi Twitterin neronleimausten takia. Olen yllättynyt ja myös innostunut.

In the settings interface, on the "Sort Type" box, there's a question mark one can click to explain the different sort modes. It leads to a 404 page. I think the actual page it should lead to is HERE. Sorry if this isn't the correct place to post this.

Sopuli was down today because of my own mishaps and a resulting database problem. In the evening I started to fix the problems, and at the same time I updated Sopuli to Lemmy's version 0.17.2. Everything should be alright now, even though my favorite theme i386 isn't anymore among selectable themes.

In addition to software update, Sopuli's logo was also updated to a newer and finer one. I did the original logo in 15 minutes on MS Paint, so the difference between the new one is like night and day. The new logo has been made for us by William Rudi (https://www.twitch.tv/willywonka_hc/, https://www.artstation.com/williamrudi ).

Sopuli oli tänään alhaalla oman möhlimiseni ja siitä seuranneen tietokantaongelman kautta. Illalla rupesin ratkomaan ongelmia, ja samalla päivitin Sopulin Lemmyn versioon 0.17.2. Kaiken pitäisi nyt olla kunnossa, mitä nyt valittavien teemojen joukossa ei enää ole oma suosikkini i386.

Ohjelmiston päivittämisen lisäksi Sopulin logo myös päivitettiin uuteen ja hienompaan. Tein alkuperäisen logon 15 minuutissa MS Paintilla, joten ero on uuteen logoon verrattuna kuin yöllä ja päivällä. Hello, some images on this site are not loading. Also I can't upload pics. When I open image directly there's error: Request error: error sending request for url (http://pictrs:8080/image/process.webp?src=AjMQEWabkH.png&thumbnail=96): error trying to connect: dns error: failed to lookup address information: Try again . Also sometimes the web pages are giving error: 404: FetchError: invalid json response body at http://lemmy:8536/api/v3/site . What causes there errors?

Membership applications have been turned on for this instance. When the feature was brought to Lemmy and many instances turned it on, I decided to watch the situation in case Sopuli turns into a kind of safe haven for trolls and spammers. Such case hasn't happened, at least with trolls and spammers suddenly registering en masse and wrecking havoc; regardless I turned membership applications on just in case.

Jäsenyyshakemukset on otettu käyttöön tällä instanssilla. Kun ominaisuus tuotiin Lemmyyn ja monet instanssit ottivat sen käyttöön, päätin tarkkailla tilannetta siltä varalta että Sopulista tulee jonkinlainen turvasatama trolleille ja roskapostittajille. Niin ei ole tapahtunut, ainakaan siten että trolleja ja roskapostittajia rekisteröityisi yhtäkkiä massoittain aiheuttaen härdelliä; siitä huolimatta otin jäsenyyshakemukset käyttöön varmuuden vuoksi.

I have gotten messages from several new users who have not received emails for email verification, notifications or password reset. These users happen to have iCloud Email addresses (@icloud.com), and it seems that the provider rejects emails coming from Sopuli. I tested the problem with a test user with other email provider and I received those emails with no problems whatsoever.

There was a problem with sending emails for notifications and registration verification, it didn't work at all. This required a little bit tinkering with the instance's config files, but now it should work all fine.

Sähköpostien lähettämisessä ilmoituksia ja rekisteröitymisen vahvistusta varten oli ongelmaa, se ei toiminut ollenkaan. Piti hieman säätää instanssin asetustiedostoja, mutta nyt sen pitäisi toimia kuten pitääkin.

When federating between Lemmy instances was made possible at the end of 2020, I decided to jump at the opportunity. I have previously explained my reasons for joining Lemmy and setting up my own instance here.

Thus, on this day a year ago, I bought VPS hosting from Hetzner and set up Sopuli. My intention was to set up a general-purpose instance, despite the Finnish name (sopuli is lemming in Finnish). I had previously discussed with @[email protected] about setting up an instance, so I messaged him and he joined first as a moderator, later as an admin.

Over the last year Sopuli seems to have got off to a really good start. There is some active user base and according to the statistics here, the instance is in the list's top ten. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future and how popular the Lemmy project in general will become.

PS. There is a problem with email notifications and user registration verification, I will try to solve it in the next few days.

Kun Lemmy-instanssien välinen federointi saatiin toimimaan vuoden 2020 lopulla, ajattelin tarttua mahdollisuuteen. Olen aiemmin kertonut syystäni liittyä Lemmyyn ja perustaa oma instanssini täällä.

Niinpä tänä päivänä vuosi sitten hommasin Hetzneriltä VPS:n ja perustin Sopulin. Tarkoitukseni oli perustaa suomalaisesta nimestä huolimatta yleisluontoinen instanssi. Olin aiemmin keskustellut @[email protected] kanssa instanssin perustamisesta, joten laitoin viestiä ja hän liittyi mukaan ensin moderaattoriksi ja myöhemmin ylläpitäjäksi.

Viimeisen vuoden aikana Sopuli tuntuu päässeen tosi hyvään alkuun. Aktiivista käyttäjäkuntaa on jonkin verran kertynyt ja täällä olevien tilastojen perusteella instanssi on listan kärkikymmenikössä. On mielenkiintoista nähdä mitä tulevaisuudessa tapahtuu ja millaista suosiota Lemmy-projekti tulee saamaan.
