I’m currently having a discussion about continents, and yes beers have been consumed.

Nowadays, are children taught in school that NZ is part of the Australian continent or are they taught that its continent location is Oceania?

I've been out of a job for 4 months now and I'm starting to feel totally hopeless. I had to leave my position for personal reasons and I'm now unable to get back because there's no work around.

I have too much cash in term deposit savings to claim any kind of benefit, so I'm forced to slowly use up my house deposit savings because I'm unemployed. I know I'm privileged to have savings but it still hurts.

Before anyone says I'm an idiot or lazy - I've NEVER in my adult life been unemployed before. Not since I was 16.

I'm a degree qualified and experienced professional. I experienced the loss of a family member and burnout from the job. and if I hadn't quit I would probably checked myself into a mental hospital I was that depressed. I feel huge guilt and regret for quitting already please don't add to it in the comments.

Every job I apply for has anywhere from 100-2000 applicants. I can't even get an entry level no degree required job, let alone jobs in the field I'm qualified for and experienced in.

I'm surviving because my husband can cover most of our bills but my savings pool is getting smaller and smaller.

When is this shitty economy meant to get better? I'd move to Australia, but I have to consider visas.

I'd love to hear from anyone else going through this because its nice to know you're not alone. Hang in there. <3

Original Title: Someone renamed Cornwall road to Pornwall road in Napier. It has gone unnoticed for months. The person who did this has been changing dozens of street names into crude words for months without being nabbed. So far the handiwork has cost ratepayers more than $5000 for repairs. -NZHerald

For the second year running, I have received on my doorstep a bag with a single 30cm ruler.

I've also received one bag with two green pens, one bag with two whiteboard markers, and a box with the rest of my children's stationery.

This is slightly better than last year, where I received 7 packages. But surely this is a terribly unsustainable business practice? I only paid $6.99 delivery too.

(I ordered it for delivery because I couldn't get to the shop in time, our school's app sends us directly to WS to order, and I'm not sure if the WS branded literacy and maths books are different to other brands. Otherwise I would've gone elsewhere)

It seems that the last of the holdouts at my place of work have been forced back into the office for 2025. I'm hearing similar things from friends in their jobs. This also looks like its happening overseas too. Just last week a friend in London said after the Christmas break everyone was expected to be in office. My sister works in the Gulf and they are only allowed 15 wfh days per year after having been 90% at home for 2023 and half of 2024.

It looked like for a period there that WHF was going to be the norm going forward. Seems like a lost opportunity, for the sake of perceived productivity, but moreso a kind of pettiness. It never effected me personally, as my job is out in the field and wfh was never a possibility.

How many out there still living the working from home dream?

frequently on fences

stem

small white / pink flowers

A plant like this one on the fence will have 1 or 2 main stems near the ground. The stems look like the 2nd picture. By cutting the stem now, while the plant is flowering, you stop this invasive weed, moth plant, from forming seed pods. Sometimes the vine climbs up trees or through shrubs. Some folks get a rash from the white sap in the stem.

Hello

From 2020-2023 I was working as a contractor. Did I put money aside for GST etc? Yes. Did I then use that money when we hit a hard financial patch and needed to cover the mortgage? Also unfortunately yes.

Have I done a tax return at all for any year in that period? That one is a no, unfortunately. Turns out I'd rather just have the stress of the IRD hanging over my head, because unfortunately I am quite stupid.

I now want to get it all sorted. I just want to know what I owe, and figure out how to pay (am selling house, that should cover it).

Anyone been in a similar situation and know who I should ask to do the numbers bit? Xero? Any particular accountant? Any recommendations welcome.

PS I would like to be able to claim some expenses if possible but I only have bank transactions not receipts. Am I screwed?

Thank you for any advice!

In all seriousness, a travesty for NZ R&D to lose Callaghan Innovation. The news is four days old but it seems to have been swept up in a shallow press release and lacked any real discourse. Where does this govt think growth will materialise from. In my limited exposure to pure science, I've found they are already incredibly undervalued. It was already so grim for post grads that it didn't occur to me we could take it lower as a country. If you've got PhD students begging for shit $60k jobs then what does that tell you about our direction. So too, professors with so much on their plate they're constantly emailing at 3am. Where's the fat, what is so terrible about our RoI in science. I can't see the sense
