Female, 39, have an almost 18 year old, been working in retail, hospitality, and admin my working life. Still have 25(+) years before I retire but is it too late to move into something like a trade? I realize health and body wellness/strength go downhill with age, anyone have any experiences with going down this track in middle age?

So many old bands are coming to NZ for festivals/events these days but there’s no one I want to see. What would be your dream 90s act to headline an event? Mine would be Portishead or Massive Attack.

Started my first proper corporate job last week after graduating, and the culture is... not what I thought it would be. I work in a decent sized company, about 40 or so people, but apart from the higher ups and a group of young girls (that have that social atmosphere amongst themselves I imagined office life would be like), everyone seems to keep to themselves, and it's really odd.

Most people eat by themselves at lunch (most at their desk), and the team I work in doesn't seem the most social and don't really talk about non-work things - one guy is leaving at the end of the month and the rest of the team doesn't know what to get him as a farewell present because they barely know anything about him outside of work.

I expected a more social environment. There's only one other guy a similar age to me, and he too mostly keeps to himself. I know I'm very much the new guy and so my perception is skewed, but in an environment like this I imagine it'll be hard to break in socially, even though this is mostly based on my observations thus far and not my personal experience.

Please tell me not all work environments are like this. If this is indeed what my job culture looks like then I can't see myself lasting long here, but if this is common in all work environments then I'm set up for 40+ years of awkwardness, loneliness and driving myself mad

I was outside Henderson Paknsave today and some cars from one direction had stopped at the pedistrian crossing for pedestrians. And an elderly Chinese man crossed about a metre away from the crossing (keeping in mind there's cars stopped and other pedestrians on the crossing. I then saw a truck come speeding towards him and slam on the brakes just before it hit them, and I looked up and there was an angry, white, male baby boomer giving this man the most hideously cruel look.

I was so shocked, I screamed an "oi, stop" at him and he looked at me startled then drove away as fast as he could, over the safe speed limit in the car park.

What gets me is that he felt so free to speed up and nearly hit a man (I detected racial motivations) without being challenged. I just think that they're not called out enough for their behaviour for letting their dogs ruin the environment and displaying racial tendenices towards others. I know that its ok to dislike different nationalities, but threatening their safety in public like that is too far.

At the state of the nation today, the PM described his vision for a better New Zealand:

"I want our kids to grow up in a country where it is totally normal for them to go and work in a company that puts rockets into space, or a cutting edge health science or agri-tech company. Or that they can create those companies for themselves."

I think it's important that we imagine what a better version of the country would look like, if we want to achieve it. What does your best version of Aotearoa look like? What would have to change?

Edit: Hey this is a really heartening thread! It seems like we (admittedly a very particular demographic) all want a lot of the same things. I wish politicians would spend more time articulating these kinds of goals, rather than the vague and technical ways they intend to achieve them.

  1. Humans are not native species to New Zealand, have destroyed countless native wildlife. Letting them roam free is disrespectful to the wildlife and conservationists.
  2. Humans are neglected the proper domestic lifestyle they need when left free outside as their only form of stimulation and enrichment. Instead, they start to kill for pleasure, attack bystanders, are stuck in survival mode, and contract or spread diseases, risking injury, shortening their lifespans.
  3. They piss and shit in park's and the sidewalk, as well as destroying their property, while free. And most importantly, people clean after their mess when they do this. Not to mention the damage that people put up with, regarding their plants and props.
