Community Rules

  1. Be respectful of one another

Please treat others with respect. Being respectful means :

  1. We do not promote ultra conservative ideas

Although Discussion around mainstream conservative Islamic theology is allowed in this community, we do not allow promotion of such conservative ideas. Therefore, posts & comments that promote such ultra-conservative ideas & websites will be removed.

  1. All contributions should be made in good faith

Contributing in good faith means being open to considering the arguments made by the other side, either in whole or in part. Rather than rejecting the entire progressive/conservative argument, what parts of the argument can you agree upon? Posts simply aiming to antagonize, preach, or pronounce takfir over an individual or group would are obvious examples of bad faith contributions.

  1. Don't proselytize

Submissions seeking to proselytize other religions or no religion, or promoting one sect or denomination over others will be removed. Posts/Comments linking to non-lslamic or Salafist sources may be removed where such links might serve to legitimize kufr, Salafist, or extremist modes of thinking.

  1. No flamewars, dramas, or brigading other Lemmy communities

While memes, screenshots, and images involving other Lemmy communities are permitted, any identifying features must be omitted or censored. Please black out or obscure any username.

If you are posting images or screenshots of other social media websites then censoring names isn't necessary.

  1. Memes (weekends only), screenshots, and other images

While memes, screenshots, and images involving other communities are permitted, any identifying features must be omitted or censored. Please black out or obscure any usernames. Also, memes may only be posted on weekends.

  1. Violations of Community rules 3 times within the period of 6 months will result in a Community ban

At their discretion, moderators may issue up to three warnings for rule violations before banning a user. Be aware that more serious offenses (e.g., violating your User Agreement with Lemmy) may result in an instant and permanent ban. Moreover, "at the discretion of the moderators" means that the moderators may opt to permanently ban any user without prior warning if they deem the rule violation to be particularly serious.

  1. We have zero tolerance for hate speech

We will remove any content promoting violence or hatred against individuals or groups based on any of the following attributes:

  1. Use English

All users are required to use English in all posts and parent comments. Users must provide an English translation if posting materials from non-English sources. Videos must either be in English or have English subtitles. We also understand that certain non-English words are part of the standard discourse of Islam and as such some discretion some non-English words are allowed without translation (e.g., Allah).

Replying to the parent comments in other languages is allowed

  1. Mental Health Rule

We are not a mental health service. Please be aware that content may be removed if the community has concerns about the mental health or wellbeing of a user. We reserve the right to contact Lemmy admin should a user express thoughts about suicide or serious self-harm. In some cases, users expressing extreme levels of anxiety around a religious issue may be asked to consult with either an Islamic scholar or a mental health professional, depending upon the circumstances.

  1. Report the trolls and move on

Please do not engage with trolls. While trolls are sometimes difficult to detect and to discern from genuine posters, if you believe that you have encountered a troll, please cut off all contact. Report and move on. You know the saying: "Don't feed the trolls"!

  1. Suspicious account activity

Accounts may be banned if there is a marked incongruence between account age and account karma. We have taken this step to cull farmed troll accounts.

Salaam friends,

I hope you're all doing well.

I created this space to support open, inclusive, and thoughtful discussion around Islam from a progressive perspective — a place where people can explore faith, justice, identity, and community without fear of gatekeeping or bigotry.

But right now, I'm finding it hard to keep up.

I'm already moderating several other communities across Lemmy (including on other instances), and it's starting to take a toll, both to my Mental Health, as well as the stress of it all.

If you care about this space and want to help keep it active, welcoming, and safe, I’d love to have you join as a mod.

Experience is great, but not required — just a commitment to the values of respect, inclusion, and growth.

Feel free to comment down below, if you're interested!

Peace and solidarity, – Teknevra

Ask them why men don't have their own MANDATORY hijab (which if they take off people will think they want to be a stripper or something and judge them) and suddenly they're quiet and giving the most weirdest reasons.

It just means that they love nit-picking and controlling the the women body. It's definitely not representing Islam because you can just be a good Muslim and men don't have to "represent" anything.

It's not about being modest because which perverted creature, years ago, was a attracted to a piece of ear, neck and hair.

And it sucks because it feels like every Muslim women been brainwashed to wear the hijab for such silly reason and still get insulted for not wearing it correct.

It's weird seeing Muslim sheikhs that are so respected spend so much time... dictating what part of a women body can be seen or not, what we can wear etc. people need to understand that the Muslim community are the one sexualizing women to the extreme.

Just saw this Charlie Kirk video telling Taylor Swift to 'submit' to her husband. And it hit me, Muslim extremists and Christian extremists (like MAGA types) have so much in common.

Both push the idea that women should have no agency. Both cherry-pick scripture to justify control. Imo, the difference is in the West, society pushes back, so Christian extremists can't fully enforce their agenda. In Muslim countries though, Salafis/ Wahhabis are often backed by governments and their own communities, which gives them power.

Another major issue is HADITHS. They were compiled over 200 years after the Prophet, but extremists put them above the Qur'an. So, I'd say hadith is Islam's version of the Bible: a mix of human additions that got canonized.

These are just my thoughts btw.

I find it frustrating when some traditionalist Muslims reject any laymen’s interpretation of the Qur’an’s passages, relying solely on the opinion of sheikhs and imams.

The Qur’an itself condemns this behavior in verse 9:31 by chastising the people of the book (Jews and Christians) for taking the opinion of their rabbis and monks as divine law. God doesn’t explicitly tell us to seek advice from scholars alone.

Instead, multiple verses tell us to personally reflect on our own on the Qur’an’s passages (verses 4:82, 52:35, 41:53, etc.).

Not trying to disparage scholars who act in good faith, but scholars are human too who can lack knowledge in certain areas or have their own narrow interpretation of the religion.

I thought they all go to Jannah but after researching a bit I've discovered that Allah turns them into dust.

They'll be gathered on the day of judgment like us and we will be judged according to how we treated them and when justice is done they'll be turned to dust.

What do you guys think?

I feel a bit depressed thinking that my kitten will turn into nothing and I won't see them again in the Afterlife.💔

I've read a post where people were saying this is Allah's mercy on them that they won't be judged or that I can ask for my cat if I go to Jannah, but what if I don't go to Jannah?

Will he disappear forever then?

And all the Muslim sisters agreeing on the comment section and bringing up other hadiths like a huge number of women are and will be in hellfire than men in jannah

Nice atheists vs Mean atheists (self.progressive_islam)
submitted 1 week ago by Teknevra to c/progressive_islam

Has anyone noticed that there’s a clear distinction between nice atheists and mean atheists? Nice ones are often intellectual, soft spoken and understanding of why someone might be religious, such as Alex O’connor. Although he may attack religion, he does it in a respectful way.

On the other hand, there’s people who aggressively attack religion with no room for respectful debate, such as the person in the screenshot. I’m not trying to spread hate or anything, but I think being unfair towards religion does it a disservice, and only speaks to those already inclined against it. Why might this be the case? Some people are more comfortable with their (lack of) religion than others. This goes for Muslims, Christians and Atheists. Some people need their worldview to be correct in order be content with themselves. And of course we have to consider how much money attacking on any religion makes.

And a lot of the time, aggressive atheists attack the orthodox opinion, presenting that as the only opinion without even mentioning others (such as the ones on this sub).

Just to make clear, I am totally okay with people that are atheist or other religions, if I can sit down and talk to them and have a chat. If the other person can’t respect my belief, oftentimes it would be impossible to even talk to them.

I can respect Alex O’connor, i’m not sure if I can respect this other person.

Republican propaganda is Nazi propaganda.

It's literally the same hate speech against minorities that Hitler used.

Saw this comment on a TikTok I came across today.

I'm sorry but this whole perspective of women that wear the hijab being a piece of "candy" that needs to be covered up is honestly just disgusting and dehumanizing.

Treating women like objects to be unwrapped or "protected" like snacks is just so degrading.

This gives the exact same mentality as the 'what was she wearing' argument during when talking about SA, shifting blame onto women instead of holding men accountable for their actions.

16

17

And this could also apply to many Muslims IRL, but more-so on the internet. Especially places like r/TraditionalMuslims for example.

Rarely do I ever see discourse on solving real social issues like forced marriage or modern slavery, or urging others to perseverance and compassion. But every time I ALWAYS see posts about people saying X is haram, or cursing a woman for "not wearing proper hijab."

We live in a world where anyone who wears a long beard, a (Jewish) skullcap (aka imitating kuffar) and white thobe (that mind you, Greek and Arab pagans used to wear a lot) and recites Arabic well is the most pious among creation, even if his attitude is terrible. He yells, curses others, abuses people often, would never stop talking about hellfire and the whole "virgins in Jannah" crap, pushes people away from Islam constantly with his dogmatic and harmful views, and the only "social issues" he addresses are women causing fitna by wearing perfume and music.

Meanwhile, say, a woman who doesn't wear hijab, doesn't even mention her faith in public, does "haram" things like caring for stray dogs, remembers Allah often, and is sincere in giving to charity and cares about making the world a better place is viewed as immoral.

I often wonder, what's the point in praying so much, mocking the faith of others who only pray 5x a day because "iT's tHe BaRe mInImUm," judging others and pushing them away from faith, if you yourself have the most abhorrent behavior?

I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, "The good deeds of any person will not make him enter Paradise." (i.e., None can enter Paradise through his good deeds.) They (the Prophet's companions) said, 'Not even you, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)?' He said, "Not even myself, unless Allah bestows His favor and mercy on me." (Bukhari 5673)

Do you seriously think Allah will have mercy on you because of your long beard and white thobe that Arab and Greek pagans used to wear? Do you think Allah will have mercy on you because you pray Tahajjud every day and recite the Quran often, while you abuse others with your mouth, push people away from the religion, use religion to justify your abhorrent desires, use religion as a means to oppress others?

Do you think Allah favors you more, the same person who constantly talks about about his brother, be it in faith or humanity, the one who only takes from his religion to hate others, the one who all he does is listen to people reciting the Quran and pray while have a heart of no goodness? You only speak about oppression as a means to spread hatred to others, not because you care about the persecuted. Say, do you care about Palestine because Jews are behind the persecution or because the Palestinians are suffering?

Or is it the "sinful" woman who cares about helping people, regardless of what identity they go by? Who doesn't go around with a full niqab to "distinguish her Islamic identity" because she knows outward religiosity is meaningless, and who remembers Allah in private often and genuinely believes in his goodness?

Abu Uthman al-Hindi reported: Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Verily, what I fear most for this nation is a learned hypocrite.” It was said, “How is he a learned hypocrite?” Umar said, “He is learned with his tongue, but he is ignorant of the heart and good deeds.” (al-Aḥādīth al-Mukhtārah 236)

"Have you seen ˹O Prophet˺ the one who has taken their own desires as their god? Will you then be a keeper over them?" (Quran 25:43)

Ayyub reported: Abu Qilabah, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “The example of the people of whims is that of the hypocrites. Allah Almighty mentioned the hypocrites with different words and deeds, the summary of which is misguidance. The people of whims disagree over their whims, but they agree upon the sword.” (Ḥilyat al-Awliyā’ 2505)

How could you go about claiming people are hypocrites because according to you they "make the haram halal" while you are the most keen to violence, and the most withdrawing of compassion? You talk about the punishment for apostasy all day, while ignoring Allah's very own words in the Quran (verse 39:41).

And what will make you realize what ˹attempting˺ the challenging path is? It is to free a slave, or to give food in times of famine to an orphan or a needy person, and—above all—to be one of those who have faith and urge each other to perseverance and urge each other to compassion. These are the people of the right." (Quran 90:12-18)

"Have you seen the one who denies the ˹final˺ Judgment? That is the one who repulses the orphan, and does not encourage the feeding of the poor. So woe to those ˹hypocrites˺ who pray yet are unmindful of their prayers; those who ˹only˺ show off, yet refuse to give even the simplest aid" (Quran 107:1-7)

"Righteousness is not in turning your faces towards the east or the west. Rather, the righteous are those who believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Books, and the prophets; who give charity out of their cherished wealth to relatives, orphans, the poor, ˹needy˺ travelers, beggars, and for freeing captives; who establish prayer, pay alms-tax, and keep the pledges they make; and who are patient in times of suffering, adversity, and in ˹the heat of˺ battle. It is they who are true ˹in faith˺, and it is they who are mindful ˹of Allah˺." (Quran 2:177)

Isma’il ibn Nujayd reported: Abu al-Khayr, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “Hearts are containers. A heart filled with faith has signs of compassion for all people, concern for their concerns, and is cooperative in their welfare. A heart filled with hypocrisy has signs of malice, rancor, dishonesty, and envy.” (Ḥilyat al-Awliyā’ 10/377)

Al-Ghazali reported: Hatim al-Asamm, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “The believer commands and prohibits for the sake of benefit and he sets things right. The hypocrite commands and prohibits for the sake of power and he causes corruption.” (Iḥyā’ ‘Ulūm al-Dīn 3/70)

The Prophet (SAW) said: Do you know who the bankrupt is? The bankrupt of my Ummah is the one who will come on the Day of Judgment with prayer, fasting and zakat, but he had insulted this person, unlawfully consumed the wealth of another, shed the blood of another, and beaten another." (Sahih Muslim 2564)

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Make things easy and do not make them difficult, cheer the people up by conveying glad tidings to them and do not repulse them from religion." (Bukhari 6125)

Abdullah bin 'Amr mentioned Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'The best among you are those who have the best manners and character.' (Bukhari 6029)

Abu Shurayh reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said three times, “By Allah, he does not have faith!” It was said, “Who is it, O Messenger of Allah?” The Prophet said, “He whose neighbor is not safe from his harm.” (Bukhari 6016)

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The Compassionate One has mercy on those who are merciful. If you show mercy to those who are on the earth, He Who is in the heaven will show mercy to you." (Abu Dawud 4941)

The Prophet (SAW) said: "Kindness is not to be found in anything but that it adds to its beauty and it is not withdrawn from anything but it makes it defective." (Sahih Muslim 2594)

How could you possible claim to be a true believer while your character is rotten, you have not even an ounce of mercy, kindness or compassion in your heart or affairs? And all you do is hate, judge, and withhold charity?

First of all this is wrong on so many levels, anthropomorphic language on hereafter as time is illogical, afterlife is beyond time and space....

Second of all modesty is a wide spectrum of many things, and it's tied to culture, every single country defines modesty in clothes differently.......

Third of all- modesty in Quran is talking about character not clothes, I'm open for discussion, this is my humble opinion.

I've always been told they were but I've seen sole Muslims get them as well I mean where I grew up I was told if I ever did them I would be burning in hellfire so bad for even daring to tattoo them on my body and will never be forgiven for it as per as Hadith. What do you think about tattoo?

True Righteousness (m.youtube.com)

I came across this video of quran verse about righteousness and it reminds of our ummah and how they believe that praying, fasting, zakat and hajj and umrah, in addition to certain way of dressing for women (hijab or niqab) are enough to be righteous while to many it's just a habit or cultural practice while allah explains in the quranic verse what true righteousness really means.
