Just wanted to share in case others encounter this dumb issue.

I've noticed that with time, my homelab is growing and with this comes complexity and time required to maintain. A big challenge is keeping on top of updates of firmware and key components (router and NAS, with pfsense and Truenas Scale respectively). What area people doing to ensure they keep on top of their homelab?

I have LMS at its latest version (8.5.3) installed on a VM. I hadnàt updated for a while and so decided to do so. To my surprise, I learnt that Logitech Media Server is now called Lyrion Music Server. Has anyone migrated from one to the other in a non-painfull way? I did a quick search. There are some guides for Synology and QNAP servers but I was after a more generic guide for pure docker. Anyone come across any?

I recently update pfBlockerNG on my pfsense box and after login in several days after I have loads of messages saying: "pfBlockerNG ASN - To utilize the ASN functionality, you must register for a free IPinfo Account. Review IP Tab for more information." Once I register are they going to start collecting data every time pfSense querries their ASN database?

I have some downtime at the moment so I'm thinking of reviving my personal blog again. I have enough experience with managed services that I'm reasonably confident to self-host. I'm aware that WordPress / Drupal / Joomla will most likely do what I want, but they're way overkill for my needs and I don't need the extra headaches.

Currently I'm leaning towards ghost, even though activitypub is only in alpha as far as I know. Plume isn't actively maintained any more, which is a shame. WriteFreely is a great project but doesn't suit my aesthetics and doesn't support themes as far as I know. I know connecting a flat-file CMS to activitypub is possible, but seems like way more trouble than I'd like to go to.

Is there anything I've missed that I should be looking at?

I'm new to self-hosting and struggling to get my services accessible externally. I'm using Traefik as a reverse proxy on a Raspberry Pi 500 running Stormux (Arch Linux ARM-based). My public IP resolves correctly via Dynu DNS, and ports 80 and 8444 are forwarded in my router. I've configured Traefik to use port 8444 for HTTPS, but external connections time out. I’ve tried:
• Forwarding ports 80 and 8444 in my router
• Allowing ports in iptables and FirewallD
• Setting my router's firewall to low security
• Verifying Traefik is listening on port 8444 locally (works with curl)
• Using Authelia for authentication (middleware configured in Traefik)
Internal access works fine, but external access fails. Could this be an ISP block or something I’m missing? Any advice is appreciated! 🙏

Hi #SelfHosted community. I've figured out a lot of my setup. I now have a new domain, laniesplace.us, just for #HomeServer stuff. It's set up through Porkbun with Dynu for #DDNS. I've now got #Traefik, #TailscaleVPN, #Linkding, #Forgejo, #Dokuwiki, Code-Server, #Portainer, #Netdata, #Watchtower, #Cockpit, #Pihole, #MiniFlux, #TheLounge, #Filebrowser, #UptimeKuma, and the #Homer dashboard service installed. I'm now trying to set up #Authelia so I can have single sign-on to my services. For some, it's working now, but I can't seem to get Linkding to work no matter what I do. This is on a #RaspberryPi 500 with 8 GB RAM and a 512 GB SD card, running #Stormux, which is based on #ArchlinuxARM. Can anyone help? I'll reply to this post with all my relevant config files in separate posts. What's happening is this: Linkding is supposed to be available at bookmarks.laniesplace.us. When I go there, I see a 401 unauthorized error and a link to sign into Authelia. Once I sign in, though, it redirects back to the page with the 401 error. I've been trying to figure this out for hours with no luck. Files will be in replies to this post.

Would anyone who knows #Traefik and #YAML or #TOML be willing to help me out? I'm trying to get Traefik set up with my new domain but running into trouble, and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I can send you my traefik.toml and dashboard.yml files.

I've been looking to get myself a VPS. It's my first time, too.

A friend of mine recommended Hetzner to me, so I signed up for them, twice, but was rejected due to "some concerns with the information".

So I'm looking for alternatives now. I stumbled upon Ionos but I saw a ton of negative Reddit posts, which is giving me doubt.

Update 1: I found https://lemmy.ml/post/19647638 - some positive feedback about Ionos, but the more opinions the better

Update 2: I proceeded with purchasing one anyway, and the experience has been smooth so far, so that's nice. But it's only been a couple hours since purchase so we'll wait and see.

Hi everyone! How are you all doing tonight? I just had a frustrating experience trying to set up a free #domain or #subdomain for my #SelfHosted services. Unfortunately, I can't use my laniecarmelo.tech domain because its current configuration doesn't allow me to add subdomains.
I discovered EU.org, which offers free domains, and decided to give it a try. However, they require you to have authoritative #DNS #nameservers before requesting a domain. I tried using #Cloudflare, but it wasn't authoritative. Then I looked into Hostry.com, Hurricane Electric DNS, and FreeDNS.
Hostry requires you to add DNS records for your domain before using their service—but how can I do that when my domain doesn’t exist yet? 🤦‍♀️ As for FreeDNS and Hurricane Electric, both have inaccessible #CAPTCHAs on their registration forms with no audio alternatives! 😡
At this point, I'm so frustrated that I've decided to take a break from figuring this out. If anyone has tips for setting up a free domain or knows of accessible DNS services, I’d really appreciate your advice! 🙏

Can the vps provider not read everything on your server, unless it's explicitly encrypted?

I'm asking because I'm interested in self-hosting mainly as a way to get privacy respecting services where good hosted ones don't exist. I'm not sure I really want to deal with running my own hardware

I'm trying to host a few docker services from my house, but my IP appears to be blocking port 80, so the only way to get a domain working that I've found is domainname.com:portnumber (I have port forwarding set up in my router, and can reach a wide range of ports, but not 80).

It looks like cloudflare will point sites to my IP but not ports, and because I can't reach port 80, I can't figure a way to route things through NGINX proxy manager on the same box.

Is there a free external service I can use as a reverse proxy to point requests to specific ports on my self-hosted box? Or else, is there another way to make my sites useable without the enduser having to specify ports?

#SelfHosting community, how do you get notifications about your projects?

I'm setting up a couple of #BASH #Scripts to back things up and notify me about events on my #RaspberryPi, but I've hit some roadblocks. Here's my situation:

- I know #email is one option, but I'm not set up for it yet. My domain is on porkbun.com, but its nameservers point to vultr.com, where my #WordPress site is hosted. The Vultr server is managed by a friend, so I don't have access to add #DNSRecords for platforms like #Brevo. I've asked him to add the records but am waiting on that.

- I've been using a #Discord webhook, but I've run into issues with rate limiting when scripts send too many messages. Long messages also cause errors.

Now, I'm exploring other ways to send notifications. Does anyone have suggestions for reliable methods or tools that work well in self-hosted setups?

I'm currently getting a lot of timeout errors and delays processing the analysis. What GPU can I add to this? Please advise.

Its got tools, knowlege embedding, search (can point it at searxng). Can use local llm or remote via api. Also it works with authelia.

I was turning on IPV6 in my router settings, and in order to do so, my router had to reboot, and without thinking, I went ahead. I then realised, my server is connected to said router, so after the router rebooted, I checked and saw that most of the docker containers were fine, except for the Piped container. When I go to the Piped instance that's hosted on my domain, it just brings up a Cloudflare Code 522 Error (I use Cloudflare)

I tried restarting the containers over and over again but no luck. Any advice? I will provide more information if needed.

EDIT: It's now solved, apparently during the reboot my ISP changed my IPv4 address.

Heyha ! I just came across a very odd issue/bug that somehow resolved by itself without knowing who or what was the culprit.

For context, YouTube doing his thing making nearly all public instances obsolete, I'm self-hosting a Piped instance in my homelab via Docker.

Everything is going smoothly, self-signed certs, traefik, accessible via Wireguard outside of my network, and and and !! LibreTube connects without any issues to my Piped instance on my Android phone and so does RiMusic.

However, in RiMusic when I was trying to access my synced Piped playlists, RiMusic went crazy and my playlist seemed to be in a query loop were I was unable to play any songs and was flickering alot.

  • Reboot the phone => Same behavior
  • Reboot the piped instance => Same behavior
  • Uninstall RiMusic/New docker piped instance => Same behavior
  • Flush everything from cache/playlist/configuration/data... => Same behavior

Nothing seems to resolve the issue software wise, next step check the logs (Interesting part):

My piped-nginx showed A HUGE amount of requests coming from my phone when accessing a Piped playlist:

"GET /playlists/d0e2c698-f3f4-435f-b2c9-96c6d3a88781 HTTP/1.1" 200 4161 "-" "ktor-client" "10.XXX.XXX.XXX"

Traefik also showed a lot of loadbalacing debug notifications something that never happens, because I'm the only user in my homelab setup !

My first though was that this is probably a RiMusic bug, but before reporting a report to GitHub, I did other debugging stuff.

  • Create an account and connect to a public piped instance
  • Create playlist/add some songs
  • Connect with RiMusic

The exact same behavior EXCEPT it stopped the loop after a few requests and made RiMusic usable again and was able to play my playlist without issues. Try again on my own instance but again, infinite loop, a lot of requests on Traefik and Piped-nginx. It even broke my Piped instance...

The only logical explanation is that the public piped instances have some request rate limiting (Yeah I know this is common practice and even mandatory on public instances). So here I go rate limiting my own requests to see if this could work as a temporary workaround while writing a GitHub bug report to RiMusic.

Adding some basic traefik labels just to give it a try:

labels:
  - "traefik.http.middlewares.test-ratelimit.ratelimit.average=10"
  - "traefik.http.middlewares.test-ratelimit.ratelimit.burst=20"

At first nothing happened but after a few docker compose -f down/up I was able to access my playlist from my own instance without any issues/bug/strangeness. Cool It works? So just out of curiosity I commented out the new traefik middelwares and restarted both container (Traefik/Piped). And .... RiMusic playlist connected to my piped instance works without the ratelimite lines... Wait what ??

What just happend ? I have absolutely no idea... I don't even know if the mentioned labels did anything... But everything works... No loading loop, No Traefik container overflown with loadblancer logs, No Piped-nginx with thousand request... It just vanished as it never existed in the first place.

I'm totally clueless except that somehow when accessing a playlist in private or public piped instance with RiMusic my phone went crazy with an infinite loop of api requests (Dunno if that's the correct term :/). Here Am I with no idea what actually happend...

And yes my phone is Heavely debloated and firewalled (Magisk, rethinkDNS) so those are not unknown requests from the web or any open source application, whats so ever !

Sorry for the long write up I hope It's readable and comprehensible. I just wanted to share my experience with you and If you also encountered some strange and inexplicable bug/issue that resolved by itself, feel free to share :).

PS: If someone has any good lead on what happened or some good insight where I should look next to get more out of this experience, I'm open to every good read !

Has anyone seen any particularly good deals for NAS's, storage or memory, mini computers, things like that, for this Black Friday / Cyber Monday season?

I came across mention of IMAPSync and Larch as tools to move emails out of Gmail to a new email account. Does anyone have any experience using these?

I have a family's worth of email gmail accounts all of which are running out of space and will need to be moved to a new email provider. They would of course all like to keep their historical sent and recieved emails.
