Sam on Mastodon (linked post) grumbles about the profanity filters on jmp.chat (presumably from upstream providers) and getting messages rejected. I've experienced the same, including having my account blocked if I mistakenly send it twice.

When I inquired, support said they were working on improved "routes" (upstream providers) and that I would be waitlisted for the beta of the new routes. That was months ago and I've heard nothing since.

Has anyone gotten into the beta program, and does it improve the situation? Because sometimes you just don't have two fucks to give.

I might need to switch my phone provider. As much as I've loved having all my messages delivered via #XMPP, jmp.chat's upstream providers decency filter is killing me. I constantly get text messages rejected for using swear words. If you ask they insist that all phone providers do this, but if I copy the same message over to my other provider it sends fine.

Are there any other good VoIP providers (not necessarily with XMPP compatibility, but that would be great) that aren't puritanical?

What is the default chat retention period in Snikket instances provided by JMP? Is it configurable in the admin panel for an instance?

Is there a link to this I can’t find?

All the documentation is really scattered (partially due to the interwoven nature of having a stack of different protocols/services).

necessary for outbound telephone calls (to landline/mobile phone network)?

… or, put another way:

  • are there any XMPP clients one is aware of which can NOT do so?

More generally, Is there a list of What XMPP extensions are used by JMPchat (and for which purposes)?

Hi folks,

I want to pay for JMP.chat as a NEW USER, but do not currently have access to a card. I also cannot easily get one.

However I do have access to PayPal, LiberaPay, and ACH bank transfers.

——— Another noob here. (I don’t yet have jmp chat but am looking to get started.)

Q: For either signup new account, or for existing top-ups:

  • … what was the change referenced regarding payment & PayPal & BTC?
  • what all past methods hv ever been supported?
  • which are currently?

Questions (all above) apply to both new signups and/or for topping up existing accounts.

(I read the two have some different methods available.)

Aside from the faq (which only mentions cc, iirc), Are there other places where any of this is/has been discussed?

Edit: I did see that Monero is allowed for topups.

  • What about Ethereum, etc?
  • ACH bank transfer?
  • LiberaPay?
  • PayPal (unclear on this)?

Thanks!

I've heard about this before, but I'm seriously looking into it as an option. But I have what I would consider to be an interesting situation and some noob questions.

Situation: My current cellular provider is T-Mobile USA and my current phone is a OnePlus Nord N200 5G (2021) running LineageOS 21 (android 14) with no gapps. For whatever reason, this device and ROM combination does not support voice over LTE (VoLTE), and so I am forced back to the 2G network every time I want to make or receive a phone call. Receiving text messages works fine, but sending them causes me issues. T-Moble, like all other carriers, is going to be shutting down their 2G network at some point in the future, which would leave me without the ability to call or text unless I'm on Wi-Fi and using Wi-Fi calling.

Questions:

  1. does JMP accept payments in Monero (XMR)
  2. If i were to get the 2GB T-Mobile tablet plan would I still be able to use the actual phone to dial 911 if necessary? From what I understand, any phone is required to be able to dial 911, whether it has a SIM card or not, or if it has service activated or not and on whatever network (Verizon, AT&T, DISH, or T-Mobile) can handle the call.

My biggest concern is the potential to not be able to dial emergency services if required.

My phone does have access to the 5G network, and on the stock ROM, it does have access to voiceover LTE. But for whatever reason, it just does not work on LineageOS at least with T-Mobile (I have not tried the others).

Edit:

  1. I saw something about an ESIM adapter that's a regular SIM card that can have multiple ESIM profiles on it. Why can't I just buy this directly? Because I don't see any kind of shop link where I could just purchase this by itself.

  • jmp.chat phone number, shared between spouses as a “family number” either of us can answer at home or away from phone.
  • Cell2Jack device that converts bluetooth phone call into landline phone
  • Cortelco 2500 telephone

Video with sound here. Video was taken of Android phone Cheogram app, but I will instead use this setup with Raspberry Pi 4 + Waydroid/Lineage OS and Cheogram app in the coming days.

Yes, you can answer and dial out from the telephone instead of device for integrated phone apps like Cheogram. For Signal, I have to tap answer on device but can pick up telephone to continue the audio call.

I currently have my business phone number on JMP through Chatterboxtown.us. Apparentlly, I now have a Snikket account set up to which I can migrate to, presumably for more reliable phone service. Problem is, I'm trying to learn what this entails and what to expect but I can't find any documentation to read through to learn. Since this is my business phone, I'm not interested in fumbling through it and learning along the way at the risk of losing service, stored messages, contact info, etc. The only thing I know is I can use the "invitation" from Snikket to get set up, but that isn't educational - it actually just creates questions.

Is there a migration guide out there somewhere that I'm missing to learn about this migration? I want to learn what happens to my message history, contacts, etc etc. I have a lot of customer history and contacts in this business account and I need to be confident what I'm actually doing.

Thanks!

There's a lot of consternation about the number of services that refuse to register against a JMP number. At the core I suspect it's about information sharing — your carrier will happily give your details to third parties, where JMP doesn't have that information to begin with.

I dealt with this differently. I stopped thinking of my mobile as my 'real' number, but instead as my public one. All personal contacts have my personal JMP number, Signal is registered against my JMP number. Cellular SMS has notifications silenced. When an SMS is important, like when logging into a bank, I know it's coming. No unexpected SMS is welcome.

This works for me because my friends don't use voice, so JMP having metered talk time doesn't matter. But mainly, I don't think of either number as 'real'. I pay for both, and each has its use.

I signed up for jmp.chat using Cheogram installed from F-Droid. It assigned me a new Snikket instance and a new Jabber ID there. It auto-generated a password. Today Cheogram is wouldn't launch at all. After a a reinstalled my saved auto-generated password is gone. Snikket told me to reach out to jmp.chat.

There is no email support. I tried messaging the support account ([email protected]) from another Jabber account and received a forbidden response. What should I do next? Just sign up for another number?
