Hey guys, after having watched the EWC finals the other week I felt that Serral made a bunch of mistakes that I wanted to point out that might help him improve. As a 2.5k mmr zerg (CunningDrooger on EU) I feel I have some expertise to share. Many think that the most professional and difficult Starcraft 2 happens at the top level but I sincerely disagree. What I often see at higher levels is that the consistency of the players mean that they are able to get a lot of information from build orders that is just much harder to do in the metal leagues. A terran without three bases at the seven minute mark? At the pro level, you know that means a push is coming, but in Gold? Not so much. Maybe a push is coming, maybe your opponent is asleep at their keyboard. There's a lot less predictability to the play. Like I saw Dark do an easy-to-spot nydus in his game against Maru; in Silver though, you know that a terran would have built a dozen turrets in their base before even expanding to make sure such noob tactics don't get through.
Now Serral is obviously a good player but I noticed some easy mistakes he was making. For example, in his first game against Clem, at the 5 minute mark he only has 44 drones. Now, anyone who has seen PiG's B2GM series would know that you are meant to have 50 drones at the 5-minute mark. I would recommend that Serral look at his build orders and try to stay on top of his macro. Obviously we all make mistakes, but maybe someone should send him a B2GM series so he can work on this.
In his later games he also made an error when he kept moving in and then retreating quickly with his army. I know Serral is a careful and patient player, but this left his Ultras exposed multiple times to sniper shots from Ghosts. I simply would not have retreated. I mean what's the point in running up, running out, and getting Ghost sniped? I would have at least stayed long enough for the Ultras to take out the Ghosts. And then you know what? Now there's nothing to snipe you on the way out. It's very simple really and I'm surprised Serral hasn't thought of it.
Lastly, I noticed Serral was very gracious when he was losing, sending a curt GG before leaving each game. This is obviously nice but unwarranted given Clem's obvious no-skill cheese tactics and all-ins. I would instead have accused him of cheesing, map hacking, and used some homphobic slurs. This would let Clem know that how he's playing is not fair and that he should adjust to how his opponent wants him to play.
That's about it. I won't be accepting feedback on these suggestions but am available for coaching if any pros are looking to up their game.
