Original Title: I am thinking of a setup which uses a Mini PC (USB-C video output) with xreal glasses. Ginger XR for windows works well. If a portable mini PC like M6 is powered with Power bank, could easily replace Beam.? Anyone who tested this.?

I just don't feel Nebula for android is enough. While it offers 3Dof, its power hungry and heats the phone. While Dex is the best I tried, without 3dof its not perfect. Beam is just an additional device wich doesn't add much (apart from 3dof) to my ultimate portable dream setup.

A real mini "mini pc" with Ginger XR might do the trick.

We have been asking Xreal to post something about what's going on with their apparent attempts to break the 'Jail break' on the Beam but they refuse to. For some reason, they feel that it's better to leave this community stewing in anger and frustration.

I not only cannot condone this action, I have no respect for whoever is making these self defeating decisions. So if I get 'fired' for this then O well, I've got better things to do with my time than try to put out fires that they are causing but refuse to put out.

When I got upset and started 'demanding' some answers, this was the response. I have no idea why they couldn't post this themselves but here it is:

"our team will make Beam more open, providing an easier access to jailbreak Beam, or you could call it the developer's mode. People don't have to do complicate procedures before they could jailbreak it and install apps.

Team is preparing it, during their adjustments to the launcher, the jailbreak solution provided by the community now will be impacted temporarily, especially the UI of the apps installed through jailbreak.

... (here I was told that they are actually reading our posts: I'm at a loss as to why they would continue to ignore the growing anger)

Jailbreak is a delicate thing that cannot be publicly encouraged by the manufacturer. What I assuming is that you maybe upset about that we seemed to be disregarding our community's need, well, we don't. We are just trying to work on a better solution that will provide more apps, more accessibility to users in a more safe way."

We have one user, Klarts, who has apparently talked to someone at Xreal and he has been attempting to tell us what's going on, but this is straight from an Xreal employee. I hope that I don't get that person fired for answering my questions, but, imho, this should never have been left to fester this long.

The best answer we can get is "in a few weeks". That was last week but at least now we know that they aren't trying to mess with the 'Jail break', instead it's just a needed step with unintended consequences, as Klarts has been saying.

So hang in there, we should start seeing something 'soon', hopefully within a couple of weeks. 🤞🤞🤞

When I hold the Brightness + for 3 seconds in say Samsung Dex, the display turns off, I single click the button again, and they turn back on split screen. However in Nebula (for Android) when I hold the Brightness + for 3 seconds, the display turns off (as it does in Dex) however when I single click it again, it restarts nebula, and resets the mode. How do you get SBS mode working in Nebula? It was my understanding you could go to TV (Nebula App) - Click the Youtube option, and click enter. Find a side by side video, click full screen follow (theater mode) and switch modes. Am I missing a step?

As the information is not included in our list, I thought that I'd do some of my own testing. I also encountered a post from HarryBooToo that listed his experience, so I'm including those.

HarryBooToo:

  • XREAL H to C cable: Won't work because it's not powered, and it's meant for Beam.
  • XREAL HDMI adapter: -does not work- confirmed.
  • Gofanco HDMI adapter (powered): Works with 120Hz!
  • Elebase HDMI adapter (powered): Works with 120Hz!

The Elebase and the Basesailor adapters are supposed to be the same adapter with different branding, so the Basesailor should work.

My testing HDMI to C adapters(all require power):

  • PeakDo: does not work.
  • Lemorele: does not work.
  • SIIG: works.
  • Rokid (uGreen CM323): works.
  • Goovis: works.

Viture Charging adapter: works.

SideTrak Splitter: works. Will allow both sets of glasses to have different refresh rates or both at 60Hz or both at 120Hz. Tested with Xreal Air and Rokid Max glasses.

Thanks to HarryBooToo for his testing!

My testing was done on a Ryzen 5 5600U miniPC on Windows 11 Pro.

Hope this helps!

I hope the Xreal team is gonna read this. I’m always working mit my iPad, if it’s writing, painting, coding or streaming Netflix. Since I got my Airs, I want to bring it in my normal day flow. For now I’m using Air casting to make another screen to use, but I want more stable. Bringing the Virtual Desktop to the IPad would be great: more display, fixing the screen and don’t need to speed another 100bucks I don’t have. Since you brought us nebula for Mac, I think bringing nebula to iPad would be the best next step (already have nebula for windows too). I know a little bit about coding an App for IOS, so I know that the biggest of all areas of software development for bringing a Mac app to iPad is “only” changing the UI.

And maybe later all the android nebula features to iPhone and IPad.

Hey guys,

Since the latest update the DPAD has been broken - I've gotten a relatively simple fix that doesn't require any external hardware (Like a mouse). Once you're all setup all you need to do is press 2 buttons and everything should work just like pre-update but with all the added new features.

Edit: I've added a second way of implementing this without the need for Accesesibility Permissions Manager, I've left the option here incase anyone prefers the older method.

Update: (Does not require two apps, just required tvQuickActions Pro, a little uglier)

First, install tvQuickActions Pro, I recommend buying from Google Play and downloading it via Aurora:

Install and follow the instructions inside the app for setup. Once installed download this tvQuickActions Pro configuration backup:

This is all the settings you'll need for tvQuickActions Pro, it binds Long-press on the top and bottom volume buttons to functionality you'll need later. It should be a .Zip file, don't unzip, load the backup directly into the app's "Restore Backup" functionality.

Once that's all done you're good to go! I've made a video here that you can follow on how to get it working:

The steps are:

When you're ready to enter the EvaLauncher hold the Volume Up button.

Don't press anything, you'll see the Eva load up and then the Accessibility settings screen. Scroll down with the DPAD and enable tvQuickActions Pro - This has been disabled by the EvaLauncher.

Click save and you should automatically return to the EvaLauncher, select the app you want to use.

Once It boots hold the Volume Down button - You'll see the screen flash as it changes to a differeent app and back. Don't press anything during this process, it should only take about 3 seconds. Once it's done everything should be unlocked and functional again, just like pre-update.

Version 1: (Requires two apps, slightly nicer UI)

You'll need two app's installed:

First is the Accesesibility Permissions Manager:

Second is tvQuickActions Pro, I recommend buying from Google Play and downloading it via Aurora:

I wont go too deep into how to install them, they all have their own steps that are pretty straight forward - You do need adb enabled to get Accesesibility Permissions Manager working.

Once everything is installed, download this tvQuickActions Pro configuration backup:

This is all the settings you'll need for tvQuickActions Pro, it binds double-clicking the top and bottom volume buttons to functionality you'll need later. It should be a .Zip file, don't unzip, load the backup directly into the app's "Restore Backup" functionality.

Once that's all done you're good to go! I've made a video here that you can follow on how to get it working:

The steps are:

When you're ready to enter the EvaLauncher double clip the Volume Up button.

Don't press anything, you'll see the Eva load up and then the Accesesibility Permissions Manager. Scroll down with the DPAD and enable tvQuickActions Pro - This has been disabled by the EvaLauncher.

Click save and you should automatically return to the EvaLauncher, select the app you want to use.

Once It boots double click the Volume Down button - You'll see the screen flash as it changes to a differeent app and back. Don't press anything during this process, it should only take about 3 seconds. Once it's done everything should be unlocked and functional again, just like pre-update.

If you exit the app or go back to the EvaLauncher you'll need to re-run steps 4. again, if you exit the launcher just remember to boot it using the volume up button.

Also, if you have any issue's please leave a comment bellow, I've only been able to test on my own device so It may require some tweeking.

Dear Xreal team,

Are there any news on the start of sales in Europe and especially Germany? So far you were always referring to either "soon" whatever that means or end of august/september. We aren't mad if the schedule won't work as planned but it would be great to know something more specific or if the eta has been shifted. I guess many potential users would be grateful, if you could give a more clear answer than just giving something unspecific like "soon". I'd be glad to order things from your official distribution channel when they launch.

Thanks in advance!

The smooth follow is smoother, and body anchor is also better. It says the depth control is removed for better frame rate with cable connection

Hey guys!

I'm seeing a lot of talk about the current update on the Beam, I've spent a fair bit of time deep-diving into it and I figured It might be good to make a more constructive post. To start, I'm Mailbot on the Discord, I've been working with the people there to get the functionality back that we lost in the update - But as we dug into the update we've been getting a pretty solid picture of what the update "Means" and was this just a FU to all us side-loaders? No, probably not.It seems this update was a step towards getting their own app-store going. They've added a lot of dependencies and changes to what is required to run their EVA launcher - The biggest change / update is their half functional cursor which has been capturing all the d-pad's input. I'm about 95% sure this is a cursor, a little orange cursor circle appears when you attempt press the d-pad, you can get it selecting items if you play with the accessibility settings (And also you would need to enable accessibility settings to get a cursor function).

And on a surface level this does look like they're trying to break functionality to running external apps inside their launcher - And ultimately it's current implementation does just that. But we need to remember that they aren't supporting the sideload. They're going to push updates that work with their development process. Based on the degree of changes and the dependency to the "Accessibility" settings my best guess would be the cursor was a dependant system that couldn't easily be disabled. We can maybe fault them for committing broken code or not designing their code a little less tightly coupled but I don't see this as being a malice attack to the sideload community. Why did they even do it at all? I'd say anyone who's spent time in the side-load knows that you either need an external keyboard / mouse or you would need some kind of fake cursor. Its actually really exciting to me to see them working on it. It's almost impossible to navigate the full interface without it, not all apps support it - Shit, even the settings screen doesn't fully support dpad navigation.

Also, if we look at everything else that was added, they've actually added some really good functionality:

  1. You can actually scroll in the app view (This is also wrapped inside an accessibility settings)
  2. Apps now open in Landscape instead of being lock to portrait
  3. They've added external Bluetooth mouse support in apps - It seems that people can finally use apps like Parsec without jumping through hoops.

So, what do we know / how do we fix it? Through our digging we've found that the EvaLauncher is now enabling Accessibility settings for itself and disabling Accessibility for all other apps when you boot it. This setting is what it's using to "steal" the inputs from the DPAD. Through testing we've found that fixing this is as easy as disabling the setting while inside the app you want to use a dpad for - unfortunately we haven't found an easy way to do this without a Bluetooth mouse. cmak414 has done a write up on one method for enabling it using an app called TaskBar:

And I've found that you can also get it working using an app called tvQuickAction Pro seen here:

We will hopefully find a better option soon, but I think honestly we could possibly have ourselves a better sideload experience with these changes - Once we've ironed all the kinks out. Also, don't blame the dev's for building the app, ultimately it's on us to support the sideload project, not them. They may need to commit something that breaks stuff, we just need to be flexible.

And remember, if they really wanted to break the sideload, they'd just disable the app-view in the EvaLauncher until the store came out. I'm sure it would be super simple. So lets not piss them off too much.

An open letter to the Xreal team, respecfully for your consideration:

You have built a thriving community of AR enthuists and active fan base for your products, please consider leveraging that community of tinkers and problem-solvers to accelerate the software developement for Beam by enabling (some sort of opt-in) sideloading.

By building this collaborative exploration with the community, you are getting free market data on what apps are the most desired & easiest to enable, significantly more runtime on various apps for stability and compatibility, and people actively exploring ways to solve problems your software team are likely facing (for example, finding out cursor input via MVTAT doesn't work).

The Xreal Product Ecosystem has a lot of strengths going for it, for example you have the best image quality of your competitors (Rokid, Viture) and the most advanced image stabilization and body anchoring capabilities.

However, if we're being objective, it's clear that Xreal's weakest area is prorobably software development. (Based on historical delivery track record, also I own a pair of Viture & Neckband and what those can do in software already surpass Xreal with a fraction of the time in market).

One way of catching up to your competitors and really getting more software momentum into the Beam is to embrace your active community and enable us to help accelerate your product (instead of spending software resources constantly fighting the community / plugging sideloading holes). Seems like it would be a win-win for everyone involved, those who want to tinker can get their favorite apps working, community goodwill and excitement for Beam is restored, and the gap to your competitors products is more quickly closed.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Respectfully, a member of the Xreal Community

P.S. A comment on the strategic positioning of Xreal Beam, while I understand the business & market decision to focus on enabling the body anchoring (a main strength and focus of your team) and pushing it out to market early to beat your competitors, my opinion is that it's clear this market is really looking for an "entertainment hub" product and the sooner the Beam can get to that state, the larger the customer base / market share you will have.

I had such high expectations for the Light and I tried for almost a year now to develop software for them that would suit my needs, but alas, it's just too difficult to work on by myself.

Selling my Light with case and nose pieces, can ship it to wherever, go ahead and message me an offer if you'd want to buy them, including where they'd be shipped to so I can get a shipping estimate. In excellent condition, well kept, no cracks or scratches. Little bit better picture/FOV than the Air. Just to hard for me to program for.

Practical posts please here only, no further rants about how asinine and stupid Xreal is for trying to disable user freedom rather than empowering us by being more open.

If you feel strongly enough, just abstain from supporting the company, cancel your orders, return their products, buy from their competitors instead.

Title: Here is the best method posted to date

As other simpler methods arise, please post them here, or at least links to their threads.

So far, I only want to watch downloaded video files, so I will simply never connect the host to the internet, but obviously this is fraught.

Ideally, the Jailbreak procedure would at some point be further refined, so that inadvertant updating would become impossible.

I've incorporated my Xreal Air and Beam into a bunch of different scenarios, from plugging into my Mac for multi-screen work or an ultra-portable setup pairing with a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard and DEX running on Android (Samsung S10e).

Here are a few of my more casual use-cases and setups:

Lean Back Theater

If I'm just watching a big screen show, I really don't want to have fiddle with mouse controls or finding the buttons on a phone screen. I just link my Xreal Airs with a GoogleTV.

Leanback Theater setup

  • Xreal Air
  • Xreal Beam
  • Xreal C - C cable
  • Lemorele HDMI to USB C Adapter
  • Chromcast with Google TV
  • Baseus USB C 2 in 1 Multi Charging Cable
  • Anker 30w GaN charger

Big Screen Steam Deck

I love the portability of the Steam Deck, but like a larger screen (and maybe some better battery life. Add the Xreal gear and some Red Magic adapter = problem solved!

Big Screen Steam Deck setup

  • Xreal Air
  • Xreal Beam
  • Xreal C - C cable
  • Nubia Red Magic adapter (with TeTitanAtoll's 3D Printed enclosure & UseBean .6' right angle USB C extension)
  • Besgoods 100w USB C cable
  • Anker USB C 715 65W GaN charger

iPad setup

A midpoint between the full leanback experience of the GoogleTV and a true work setup. The Cheerdots CheerTok is really the power tool remote for phone or tablet use cases.

The iPad setup

  • Xreal Air
  • Xreal Beam
  • Xreal H - C cable
  • Apple Lightning to HDMI Adapter
  • iPad
  • USB C - Lightning cord
  • Anker 30w GaN charger
  • Cheerdots CheerTok remote

I use the Beam in combination with the Air's Steamdeck and Nubia Magic dongle.

This way i can power the steam, Beam and Air's at the same time, while playing. Even though the Beam slowly drains, its enough to last me my game sessions.

This way i have 1 cord from the steamdeck and 1 cord to the glasses, instead of multiple.

It worked wonders, but after the update the image gets weird.

The image is normal when the air's are drectly plugged in the steamdeck, or in the magic dongle, or in the beam. When the beam is directly plugged into the deck aswell, it works too.

So non of these devices are broken. Just not together, since the last update.

Now i cant play and charge the steamdeck at the same time.

What software upgrades or physical adaptors do you suggest if Xreal devs are listening? I for one would like a lock option so that it does not throw me to the main menu during a movie when it is in my pocket. Maybe a super long press will lock it. This would be helpful since it takes so long to get it working properly in the first place. It is frustrating when I get thrown out and have to reconnect.

Will the Beam have future support for 120hz (when plugged in).

I just got my beam and already miss mirroring my laptop @ 120hz, I do like that I can set my screen to 115" so I can see the whole thing better. (Which is really what I wanted the beam for) but didn't realize Id loose 120hz.

Also it seems the battery still drains when when plugged in to my laptop(which is also plugged in), I thought it would charge

What a waste of money. At this point sell all of your xreal gear and get rokidmax w rokid station. This has been endless dribble of half ass gear with sub par additions. The beam solves zero issues unless you own a steamdeck or switch apparently. I just want to stream some f#%&^&ing movies and videos while im on the bus without 20lbs of attachments and 20 connections. You can cast to beam but can't navigate via the beam so I still need to take out my phone, so for that then I just connect to my phone and solve the bs DRM issues while im at it (rokid doesn't have this issue). I was excited for Nreal now XREAL but what a complete let down. Now just to jailbreak the thing I have to buy a non powered dongle unlike the powered one I needed for the previous thing I was trying to work around. WHAT A COMPLETE CLUSTER F^%&!!! Plugging in dongle with hdmi out but I guess bc it has a "powered" option it is unusable for the hack. THIS IS RIDICULOUS

He All! I'm a small maker on Etsy and make these light blockers for the xreal Air's, they get VERY good reviews and really make using the glasses in bright environment much better. Full blockers block most light (but not 100%), and the half blockers are great for eliminating the glare from the sides and below (no more shirt reflection lol). 3D Printed in very soft TPU rubber. Both can be kept on the glasses while in the case too. I've posted this before (it's been awhile), this is just for the new people to the community, sorry if you've seen this before.
