Hey all, I've finally worked out all the kinks in my Linux gaming driver for the XREAL Airs, and it's available for all Steam Deck users in the Decky store (you'll need to install Decky if you haven't already). There are also manual installation instructions for all other Linux users.

With the driver, you can use your glasses for ALL games (not just VR games, though there are options for that if you're interested). First-person games are especially VR-like. Try it out and let me know what you think!

After several months of usage, I can confidently say that my experience with these glasses has equipped me with some insight to affirm their potential to meet your intended purposes. However, it is crucial to manage your expectations, a notion I will delve into shortly.

The journey of these glasses began with the intention of enabling me to enjoy YouTube and Netflix from the comfort of my bed and providing a means to access my work computer remotely while traveling. Have they fulfilled this initial vision?

The answer lies somewhere between Yes and No.

USE CASES

These glasses have accompanied me on various travels, particularly those where I know I will have reliable internet access, such as certain work-related trips. Initially, I was excited about utilizing remote desktop functionality to accomplish work tasks. However, the challenge arose from the screen following my head movements, rendering it almost impractical for work and annoying to watch movies with.

To complete my tasks, I found myself always straining my eyes. Ultimately, I discovered that I preferred connecting Samsung Dex to a hotel's TV when available. Nonetheless, my glasses did deliver a significant advantage in another use case: watching videos during flights or while waiting around. The combination of the built-in Nebula app and YouTube provided a remarkable experience, akin to projecting a massive fixed movie screen, exceeding 300 inches, above the heads of fellow travelers.

Edited photo showing how your eyes would perceive the projection: Notice the blacks more transparent then colors true to life experience in bright lit areas.

GingerXR

The next surprising discovery came with the app GingerXR, which allowed me to use multiple browsers within the Nebula app as a virtual monitor. This setup recreated my three-screen office environment at work. By remotely connecting to my PC and using a script to generate virtual monitors, I could cast them wirelessly via a QR code scanned with my phone's camera or entering a URL address provided. While this necessitated bringing my laptop along, it offered access to my office workstation on all three virtual monitors.

Windows PC Nebula Support

Several months ago, a significant development occurred when the beta version with Windows support became available for Xreal's Nebula app. This update allowed me to utilize three screens seamlessly, eliminating the more complex process of setting up URLs through GingerXR. At that point in time, this accomplishment perfectly aligned with my primary work-related objective for the device, and I continued to use it in this capacity for several months.

Xreal Beam

This remained my preferred setup until the arrival of the Xreal Beam. While I appreciate its capabilities, I also acknowledge its significant limitations. Wireless casting through Samsung Dex is impressive when the connection is strong and stable, boasting a more stable 3DoF experience than the Nebula app.

So, where do I stand now? The experience has been an evolution and regression simultaneously.

It's really difficult to simulate head movement it really looks more seamless then what is filmed here

Now, with the Xreal Beam, the total experience has improved significantly, offering 3DoF functionality across all devices. It complements Samsung Dex superbly in its single-screen use case, marking a game-changing addition for travel.

The singular fixed screen of the Beam is remarkably smooth, clear, and stable. Returning to the Windows Nebula App and its three-screen setup is noticeably inferior in performance and efficiency. I now prefer the Xreal Beam + Samsung Dex combination over the heavier virtual three-monitor and laptop configuration.

Although I no longer require my laptop, my work efficiency has diminished because I favor the elegant simplicity of the Beam's body anchor mode that provides the magic three degrees of freedom.

Short Comings

Nevertheless, it falls short in several areas. Carrying and charging an additional device detracts from travel efficiency. Also there currently are no native apps for the Xreal Beam, and less important but a still a point of discussion is it's aesthetic appeal which definitely lags behind that of the glasses. Moreover, certain apps, including Netflix, employ encrypted DRM systems that preclude wireless casting to the Beam.

Features Needed

To achieve its full potential, the Xreal Beam should function similarly to the Nebula app, supporting YouTube and browsers, along with other video streaming services, effectively replacing the need for Android phone pairing. Each opened app should be treated as a monitor, complete with mouse and keyboard support, allowing seamless navigation across multiple apps, akin to a standard multi-monitor setup.

Summary

In summary, I am thoroughly happy with my purchase and believe that the limitations were well within my understanding, as I had thoroughly researched them before making the purchase. However, I do caution others to carefully consider the drawbacks I've mentioned before committing to the investment.

On the subreddit, numerous posters express disappointment, with a majority failing to grasp the primary purpose of the Xreal Beam and that is to have 3DoF on all connected devices. Conversely, individuals like myself wish for certain features that are currently unavailable but already exist within the ecosystem, such as the Nebula App.

I no longer use it on a daily basis, as the initial novelty has faded; nevertheless, it remains a preferred device for me to replace my laptop during travels. It comes to my rescue when my wife decides the TV is hers for the evening, as I would much rather enjoy her company than watch alone in a separate room or on my phone.

When the Air glasses first launched I couldn’t wait to buy these for myself as a head mounted cinema cause that’s all I want to use them as. I’m planning to buy them next month after I get a new phone with the (hopefully) thunderbolt USB-C port so I can use them without needing an adapter. I’m planning to use them on a long flight in November so I have to buy a pair before the journey.

But I can’t stop comparing them to the competition coming with such user focused products like the Rokid Max+Station and Viture’s product line which I think looks the best (idk how they perform yet as I couldn’t find many credible reviews online).

XReal’s lack of fixing what’s broken and instead introducing new unfinished products is making me rethink wanting to buy XReal. The only thing going for XReal is the community as the others don’t have as big of a community as XReal and not to mention Nebula. I’m thinking Nebula is better than anything the competition has to offer or am I wrong? I want to get a 3 display setup for my work computer and idk yet if the competition offers that.

Can someone please help me decide why I should buy XReal over the others?

I'm reading and it says Xreal Air 2 will be available on online shops (chinese amazon/ebay clone websites) tomorrow. No details are disclosed yet, as you can see in the article (you can google translate the webpage), it only mentioned "new generation of display", will be lighter, and has better stereo system.

The poster says details will be disclosed 9/6 9:00 (should be AM, GMT+8). I've been looking at HMD recently and Xreal Air looks decent, an update sounds promising.

UPDATE:

Official website has been updated:

But it doesn't have much information. The Amazon/ebay clone, tmall store has more information in the product page:

They are poster images so a bit hard to translate. Basically it claims:

  • 10% lighter (72g vs 79g)
  • 10% thinner, 40% softer (sounds like condom ads?)
  • 21% improved PPI - 4032 PPI but still 1920x1080 x 2, same 49 PPD so not really sure how PPI was improved

So basically a small iteration to keep itself in the game. Hopefully these consumer level products will lower OLED displays cost, and push for higher resolution / bigger size for larger FOV and such. For people who just ordered Air 1, it should still be a solid choice.

Thank you very much for your support of Beam. We have been continuously updating Beam's OS to enhance the user experience. Here are the release notes for the Beam OS upgrade. The changes we make to Beam's features are based on your feedback, so your opinions are highly valuable to us.

The Beam OS upgrade occurs automatically when the device is connected to Wi-Fi, so you don't need to take any additional actions.

Price difference is around 300 RMB ~ around 43$.

Brighter 500 nt vs 400 nt

smaller size screen -> higher PPI (tho I don't know why smaller screen is better)

Pro has 3 level of electronichromic

Air 2 is lighter, softer legs, slim-er

more privacy speaker design

Pro will be out 9.19.

Ok, it seems to be a soft upgrade - a solid but not an essential one.

Is the Beam the definitive solution for using it on home consoles/PC without USB-C out? No lag or anything?

Honestly every solution I came across either lacks something

The Nreal official adapter is battery powered

Third Party Hdmi Adapters are hit or miss (some don't work audio, some you can't find anywhere anymore, some you can find but only ship to the U.S or Europe and would be easier to ship it from China/Asia, some even don't work as stated)

I'm willing to buy the Beam, but I will also have to buy a kinda expensive HDMI > USB-C cable with it, so I really don't want to disappoint with that one.

The term "Jail breaking" has a specific meaning that is not met here but the term has been causing some issues. It was chosen for a lack of a better one, not because it was entirely accurate.

By request, please refer to our work as "Pre-dev" efforts as this is much closer to what is going on and has no nefarious implications.

Xreal is working on a mode tentatively called 'dev mode' but it looks like it will be capable of much more than just side loading apps, like possibly changing resolutions and the like (wildly guessing here). This appears to be one of the reasons why the 'pre-dev' mode keeps getting broken: they are parallel efforts with no communication, it's not surprising that our toes keep getting stepped on.

So what we are doing is likely helping (I hope) but does not encompass the totality of 'dev-mode', hence the newly coined phrase: 'pre-dev mode'.

Please start using it.

There's no guarantee but it is my hope that it will make communication about our efforts easier.

Thank you!

Hello, I hope you can help me with this query. After using the lenses in body anchor mode for a while, they look tilted, why is this?

EDIT: u/Happy-Freedom6835 explained that it's possible to use the Beam to get the exact experience I wanted -- it's trivial to use the Beam as a giant 2nd display (I couldn't personally do this with Nebula).. this is baller.

The stability is night and day better.. it's so weird I didn't realize how valuable it is to have a stable screen until I started using the Beam.

But there's no 3 desktop Beam view yet, and going back to Mac just feels so weird now

Can't wait for a software upgrade or something to handle it, even just a slower / less jittery follow would be so much better

Found this old post from stackoverflow & I confirm this works UNTIL you reboot.

Steps:

  1. Windows + N to access the notification panel -> Expand it -> Click the "User" icon next to settings icon.
  2. Click "Add user" -> click Ok
  3. Wait (if settings UI stops responding, click 'Wait')
  4. You'll see initial settings screen for Beam.
  5. Windows + N for Notification shade -> Expand -> Click on the "User" icon -> Click "Owner" or original user.

Now, you should be able to access Developer Settings & User manager. You can just delete the newly created user. You'll be able to access Developer Options until you restart the device.
