If you've seen his interview you know its not sentient. Or at least, its very unlikely to be. Not to say Google wouldn't want to make a hyperintelligent digital slave, but this chat bot really isn't there. This Blake person was just kind of a nut, they also believed in "Christian Mysticism" and stuff.

Yes and in the alternative this is like perfect marketing for google. This story didn't have to be nearly as big as it ended up being, but they certainly leaned into it.
