Just slightly related:
There was a great episode of the Dig just recently discussing the politics of vaccines. One of the most interesting points were where Achal discusses how the vaccine for the common flu is managed. Apperantly there are about 110 countries that put their money together each year to analyse the current strains. Then they research the new formula for the flu vaccine, which is subsequently published, without copyright and completely open, by the WHO.
This way there is competition in the manufacturing process and that's how it is possible to distribute the flu vaccine every year in these massive volumes at low costs.
Would be great if something similar would help us get out of this pandemic....
