Ah I didn't realize that about Thunder, thanks for relaying that.
Once the API is complete it would be up to the app manufacturers whether they wanted to implement those additional features or not. Some, like the wizard that walks a new user through the account creation process by subscribing them to multiple communities that they express interest in, may be more difficult than others. I suppose that's a fundamental limitation in separating out the front and back end components like that - a change to some things would need to be compensated for while a change to other things may have to be replicated entirely independently by many people, most to all of which are either entirely or mostly unpaid.
It would help if PieFed could work with a pre-existing Lemmy database of posts and comments and users. Sublinks promised to do such but then the lead developer had a baby and the work nearly if not entirely halted, so I can well understand Rimu not wanting to promise such. And I don't know the details - it may be far too much effort. So even if dbzer0 did start up a PieFed instance, it might be run in parallel with the existing Lemmy one, rather than migrating all the old content over to it.
So, much like trying to get Reddit users to come to Lemmy, due to all the "legacy" material (content, users, experience with, app support for - e.g. even if some Lemmy apps added PieFed, would all of them do so? - etc.), there are major hurdles to be overcome.
Although if some of us don't start the ball rolling, then it never will. Inertia will then help keep it going, being at least necessary even if nowhere close to sufficient.:-)
