As a German: That generation of kids was not happy. In fact they were a very unhappy bunch.
That was also due to the poisonous pedagogy, especially the book Die deutsche Mutter und ihr erstes Kind that was favoured at the time and even still used until the 70s or 80s.
Holy shit, that's a google rabbit hole I fell into. She also wrote, "Mother, Tell Me about Adolf Hitler." Spooky parallels with evangelical and right childrearing books.

To be fair most of the generation around this time weren't particularly blessed..
