Reposting from the last time this subject came up

Bolded titles are my top recs. Series listed in chronological order of my seeing them:

Violet Evergarden (not the movie)

Hyouka (skip the ova)

Belle

A Silent Voice

Baccano

Deca-dence

Castlevania is one of those shows that has no right to be good and yet is just overall great.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It has problems, mostly notably trying too hard to be edgy at times, but the character interpretations and the work done to make it all a consistent world are pretty good.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The first season leaned way too hard on the gore. The show is at its best when characters are having calm discussions imo

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

Yeah, that's one part of edgy for edgy's sake IMO. The other being absurd dialogues from nowhere, e.g. random anecdotes about goat fuckers.

Great list, thank! Have you seen children of the whale ? If my memory is correct it could make it on this list. Also I don't recall any weird stuff in Arcane season 1 (does it qualify as an anime though?).

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Nope, but it's on my watch list now. Top two recommendations on MAL are Land of the Lustrous and From the New World? I'll watch it as soon as I finish Kurau

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

How has everyone forgotten about Gundam?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I was looking for someone to mention Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop.

What are your thoughts on Fullmetal Alchemist? I personally adore FMA: Brotherhood and I think it meets these criteria.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

Yeah, they're on the list but I understand it's a long list

Loved em. Controversial opinion: I preferred '03 over Brotherhood. They made stronger narrative decisions, I prefer its Pride reveal over Brotherhood's Wrath reveal (happening like 2/3rds into the show gave you a lot more time to build up trust in him before the reveal), and most of all I liked their homunculus origins better

Doesn't violet ever garden have that weird relationship between the underage girl main character and the army guy (my apologies I haven't see in it a while)

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If you watch the english dub, it's ambiguous enough to be interpreted as a father/daughter relationship. That's also why I recommend skipping the movie

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Unfortunately, the movie is a lot less ambiguous.

But also the movie doesn't exist lalalala it never happened lalalala I can't hear you

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It would be cool if there was a movie though. Could be cool, as long as they didn't decide to ship Violet with her slaver and also completely erase any character development she had re: learning to give up the Major and live her life for herself. How awful would that be?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

Well perhaps they could do a movie focused on Violet working with another client, since that's where the show always shined best. Maybe she should could tutor a young girl at a private academy or something. That might make for a good enough movie.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Kotaro lives alone? Thought it was quite lovely.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

It is now on my watch list

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This is an excellent list, Planetes is one I keep coming back to, I always have about it too anyone who will listen!

I'll have to check out some of these others I haven't seen.

Another good one is Monster, but it does have problematic relationships

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

I loved the Planetes manga, too bad it was so short

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Edgerunners had that creep grooming David by sending him porn as a minor, and its just glossed over.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 3 days ago (2 children)

thematically appropriate for the setting. Night city is fucking horrible, and no one should pretend that it isn't.

also, i just watched that, like, within the last couple hours recently.

The relationship between lucy and david feels kinda forced, but other than that, 9/10 no notes.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Gives three notes, claims no notes at the end.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

*no additional notes

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

The question isn't things being thematically appropriate. The question is animes that don't sexualize minors, and Edgerunners fails at that.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Honest question: Assuming that you're also referring to the creepy ripperdoc porn stuff. Is that really sexualizing the underage character? It does not seem to be something that is trying to make the character sexually attractive to the viewer. It does fit in with the hypersexualized setting and acknowledge that sexual thoughts and sexual identity don't begin at age 18.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Showing minors in sexualy explicit situations, especially when its played off as a suprise gag and shows the actual content to the viewer, is sexualizing minors, yes. And the ripperdoc is still seen as a positive, to the point where David's crisis of faith starts when he slams him against the wall when he's beggining to psych-out and he feels bad, so it's not like it really villianizes the character.

You keep using the setting like its a gotcha, but it doesn't change anything by trying to shift the goalposts from the core of the conversation, about not sexualizing minors, i.e. not showing minors in sexually explicit situations, especially those meant to titilate the viewer. Feels akin to the "but she's a 3000 year old dragon" arguements.

You can talk about coming of age topics and address the concepts without directly showing things on screen. Many pieces of media have done so without that, and do so with making clear the creep doing the grooming is not a positive character in the slightest.

Thanks very much for the long reply.

This is indeed what gave me most conflict. The ripperdoc is a creep and didn't seem very positive to my memory but I haven't seen it for a quite a while. Not only was he being creepy but was basically a drug dealer (illegal BDs) preying on a kid, and was an enabler, helping David get into the fucked up life of a merc (and implanting the sande).

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Been a minute since I watched it. You talking about the BD producer? Because that shit super ain't glorified lmao

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

David's ripperdoc shares porn with him.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago

Thank you! I've been wanting to get into anime (more than just DBZ), but I'm never sure where to start

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

damn that's a good list. I recognize some of those names

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"doesnt sexualise underage character"

you sure this the list you wanted to paste here?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Do you have any disagreements?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

It's on my watch list now, will probably make it onto this list next time the topic comes up
