Federation works very well. At least on my instance, I had no problems reading and responding to posts from lemmy.ml and others. Regarding your argument that there are Lemmy instances without federation, I can agree. But there is also something like that with Mastodon, Pleroma, Plume, and so on.
Thanks for the reply its been a long time since I was here. Is there a federation tutorial somewhere. Main questions are where is a list of the federated servers and how to find communities and use from them?
Global list of instances: https://join-lemmy.org/instances
Instances linked to this instance: https://lemmy.ml/instances
List of communities: https://lemmy.ml/communities
You can load a post/community/etc. from a link to another instance by pasting the link in the search bar.
thanks for that
so the only way to find communities and their posts on other instances is on them?
and I need to bring the link back here to post or reply on them? :-/
No problem.
You can sort the feed by "All" instead of "Subscribed", which shows posts from all instances. The community list can also sort communities from all instances. You don't need to go to the other instance's site. You can view the posts for communities on other instances by clicking on them like you do with local ones.
awesome thanks!
Thats the best part with federated stuff...
so I take that as sarcasm?
