I have also spent my fair share of time looking at the autogenerated captions and I'd say that on average, every other sentence is mangled in some way that makes it nearly impossible to understand. Maybe it's better than nothing if it's a video that someone really has to watch, but in general I think the existence of the autogenerated captions makes creators less likely to handle it themselves since they feel like it's already covered.
