I suspect the LPC, along with much of the neoliberal consensus in the developed world, really misread the tea leaves on this one.

They ran the usual playbook, only to have it blow up in their faces.

If it weren't for the human cost, it'd be interesting to see a few more of these missteps happen in hopes that the west finally learns that it can't sit back and just assume that the interests of the already-powerful intersect with the common good. Sadly, it looks like it'll take a lot more misery before our leaders grow a spine.
