Wow I've always just thought it just backwards as a design feature. I wore a NATO / OTAN patch for a year 😂
Back when NATO was established, having French language plastered all over was France's way to stay relevant after the war, despite getting their asses wooped by the Germans and being kept on life support by US and UK during the war.
Charles De Gaulle wanted French culture to stay dominant. He did not want UK to join in the European Economic Community because he feared that English language will become the international language instead of French.
