Exactly.

There's a way to play around with Canon and still be recognized as "trek". You don't have to change into a pew pew laser generic space shooter with a Star Trek icon pack applied (ahem...I'm looking at you, Discovery) in order to change up the universe a bit.

Enterprise (in the fourth season) was really really good at that while still FEELING like a Star Trek show. If the whole run had been like that it would have gotten it's seven seasons.
