To add to @[email protected] , in lemmy you don't follow users, you follow communities. To subscribe to a federated community, go to the search bar and type [[email protected]](/c/[email protected]) then click into it and subscribe.

Sometimes this won't work and you have to put https://instance.tld/c/community_name into the search bar to actually have it appear.
