I'm just kind of surprised how much Aston and Merc dropped off ot this track.

I was surprised Merc wasn't better but Aston has struggled with straights and high-speed corners the whole season so it wasn't a huge surprise they were mediocre here. Silverstone might be rough for them too, especially if they don't have any upgrades coming. Hungary should be their next strong track, so when we get there we'll see a true representation of how far behind they've fallen/how well the others have caught up.

Also, Alonso seems to like it, even though he's never won there! Could be spicy. I fear they've fallen back for good now though

It all depends on budget, really. They've said from the start that the focus is winning in a couple of years, so maybe they spunked the whole budget for this year during the winter break to get to a solid platform and will now have to focus entirely on next year's car instead.

If they bring upgrades over the summer they have a chance to keep up, they've hired good people and the new factory is online since May. If not, then, yeah that's probably it for this season and we better pray Nando is still sharp next year.

I think this race was a good demonstration of why the previous claims that Merc, Ferrari and AM had gotten closer to Red Bull were very short-sighted. RB entered the Canada GP weekend claiming it would be their toughest race of the year and yet they still won by ten seconds.

Realistically, the gap that RB has over the rest of the field is insurmountable with in-season upgrades alone. Also consider that RB are likely to be running their cars conservatively for better reliability now, and Max is winning many races from lights to flag without pushing especially hard.

I had to double check that they have indeed won every race this season

That goddamn Monaco strategy blunder from Aston is going to haunt us forever isn't it? If Alonso ends up retiring without another win after them throwing away that chance I will actually cry.

Don't kid yourself, AM never had the pace to actually fight the RB.

Most analysts seem to agree Alonso would have had a very good chance of winning Monaco if pitting for Inters immediately. It's still not a guarantee of course but Max would have had to overtake him on track in wet conditions.

almost feels like Verstappen also went for the fastest lap at the end so that the final result doesn't show the +30s gap. so further down the road, they can argue that the race pace of the RB isn't as far ahead of other teams as it really is.

I think if that were the case, then the team would have suggested it. This was the choise of Max, he even had to convince the team.

[โ€“] reddwarf@vlemmy.net 3 points 2 years ago

I think you are overthinking this a bit.

Max wants to win, everything. That is is his motivation. Although I would argue Lando in points and having the fastest lap would not motivate Max to take that away from Lando. From Checo though, he has to take those points.

And we have not seen the true pace of that car and Max. Both are held back and I fear we will never see the true pace of that RB19 + Max combination. It's a bit sad tbh but if he is not pushed, you will never see the limit of them.
