I looked up something like "open source reddit" and came across lemmy and decided to join and stayed. Now I run midwest.social and buckeyestate.social.

Can't remember the exact way I found out about Lemmy. I must have been browsing Reddit or Mastodon and suddenly there was lots of talk about Lemmy.

The commies gave it to me

I honestly don't remember. I think I was actively looking for a federated reddit-like site, because I really liked the concept of a federated platform as an alternative to the monopolistic social media giants, and I stumbled upon a link to lemmy somewhere. The project seemed great and I stayed.

I've been playing around with the Rust programming language on the side for a while. I started an account when I heard Lemmy was being written in Rust.

I found it on Reddit. I have been neglecting my Reddit account since joining Lemmy.

Mastodon. Privacytools.io instance when it still existed.

I started looking into Lemmy after I installed LibreWolf and it was listed as one of their socials. I already use Mastodon and Reddit is one of the few proprietary social media sites I'm still on. Lemmy seemed like a no-brainer.

Through a post about Lemmy on Reddit.

I searched for reddit/teddit types of apps on F-Droid, Lemy came up many times with different assistant apps as well. Upon installing it and seeing what was posted I became interested without having known what it was in the first place.

I honestly think I found it on Hacker News and joined out of curiosity. Stayed out of spite when people on the post had their hot takes on the politics.

I downloaded Lemmy out of curiosity when it was featured on F-Droid

I found it from the Privacy Guides "social news aggregators" page. It describes Lemmy as a fediverse-compliant Reddit alternative, which sounded really appealing to me. I joined pretty quickly after that.

Edit: looks like they removed it a couple of days after I posted this lol. I guess that makes sense, given PrivacyGuides is meant explicitly for tools that are designed for privacy, supporting encryption and such. Any social media doesn't really fit that. You can see the discussion that lead to its removal here.

i saw it on the rust subreddit back when it first started out. i didn't really understand what federation was so to me it was just "Reddit rewritten in Rust" and that sounded cool but i didn't really get the point or how that would affect the users. commenters seemed to agree so i moved on. then i started caring a lot more about my online privacy in the past year, discovered matrix, then the fediverse, then lemmy while looking for more fediverse alternatives for mainstream social media. i never really got into social media other than reddit, so it was awesome to find a part of the fediverse that offered a similar experience

I was following Dessalines' work when I saw he was working in this project; it's nice. I'm sad hexbear forked so hard federation isn't possible but this is much more sustainable imo. Hope they're able to get their code base in line and merge!
