::Update:: TLDR after a lot of googling I am leaning heavily towards the 970h or maybe 7100.
I am using a oldie but goodie, Onkyo 876. It works good for me set up in a spare bedroom connected to a 50" 4k. I connect a PS4 and a Steamdeck to a 50" 4k TCL and pass the audio to the Onkyo via HDMI. I also use the TV as a streaming box. I went this route because my old Onkyo won't pass newer video standards; 4k HDR.
In an attempt to streamline and update my AV connections I started looking at newer AVRs. I dont really have any special needs other than I hope to get at least 10-15 more years out of the next AVR. Ive not experienced any of the large multi channel or atmos setups and I am not terribly interested. Although I would love to get a new set of speakers to replace my (same vintage as the AVR) SVS STS-01 towers and related surrounds and Outlaw LFM1ex sub. To be honest Id like to get a tower with either large bass driver or powered to take the place of the large sub in my room. something like vintage Kef Reference (dreaming), RF7s, Pendragons or DIs, GoldenEar Tritons, Lsim 707... I love big beautiful towers.
I recently went down the rabbit hole and pretty much narrowed down to the Onkyo RZ50, the Denon 3800, or the wild card... Emotiva Mr11. they are all around the 1500 price point. On paper the Denon and Onkyo are really similar. I also tip my hat to the Emotiva for its ease of adding amplification down the road, not that that is high up on my list.
Ive obviously have lived under a rock as you can tell from my current equipment list. I am looking for some guidance in the newer tech packed AVRs. Also, be honest, If we are in the middle of a "standards" war I dont mind waiting a year or two, better safe than sorry... I still regret my Sony XBR850b purchase, it is the model before the 4k standard... aaarrr...
Anyhow..
Tech nerd guy, wants single connection interconnects, mostly streams and games, occasional BD disk and turntable music. Likes large speakers, currently has legit sub but wants to eliminate. Interested in trying Dirac room correction.
