Man, I remember trying to keep reading with as many fingers as possible "bookmark"ing the last several decision points, in case I chose poorly and fell to my death or got eaten by a Yeti.

Same! I wasn't much of a reader as a kid but I ate these up.
Man, these were the best.
A lot of them got DARK.
Ever try Joe Denver's Lone Wolf Saga?
Never heard of it. Is it good?
I enjoyed it. It has the same types of choices, but with the addition of callbacks (e.g. if you've ever been to the city of such and such, turn to page 53) as well as inventory, combat, and skills. If you want to try it out, Android has an app to do so https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.GDVGames.LoneWolfBiblio and it takes care of tracking a lot of the things.
Downloading now, thanks!
I used to pick these books to read in elementary school for book reports. I usually would make choices to end the story quickly.
One time I ended too quickly and decided to quit training on the space flight simulator and go home. My teacher called me out on the length of my presentation.....I made sure to make it through some more of the books before stopping after that one.
