There were five kids in my grade who had the same first name. Nicknames were basically mandatory otherwise it got confusing.

The thing is, kids will randomly have nicknames for all sorts of non trans related reasons. The most common reason is that there's two kids with the same name in the same class.
This vaguely relates to something I learned the other day: traditional Madagascan names are all mononyms (as in no first name, middle name, surname, it's just one singular name) and can be extremely long like Andrianampoinimerina. Wonder how much accidental filibustering roll call would be for a class of Madagascan exchange students. Someone gets it wrong and is legally mandated to try again, lmao
