This community is dedicated to the discussion about the Raccoon for Lemmy mobile app. Raccoon is an open source app powered by Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) and Compose Multiplatform (CMP) which intends not only to provide a mobile client for Lemmy, but also to create a space where users' voice is listened to, and we grow together by exchanging opinions.

Main features:

Why was the project started?

We believe that Lemmy has a lot of potential and part of its success depends on users being able to enjoy the experience on robust and well-done clients. Moreover, encouraging discussion between people is important to develop a healthy and tolerant society where everyone's right and freedom are safeguarded. Hi everyone! Sorry, I forgot about last week's "Ask me anything" session, so let's use this post as usual: you reply with questions and I'll answer them.

Moreover, I would like to give you some news about the project roadmap. I did not forgot to release a stable version, actually 1.13.3 is expected by the end of the year. In the meantime I've been focusing mostly on technical improvements, refactoring and code cleanup. For example I made dependency injection and gradle scripts much more maintainable, and I've been fixing a couple of issues that you reported.

Once I'm done with some more bugs (e.g. the ones concerning images) I'll be releasing, so don't worry. If some of you are willing to test the beta releases, you are more than welcome, thanks.

As always #livefasteattrash 🦝🦝🦝

Cool project, found it from this post about 85 seconds ago. You've got a lot of info on your GitHub but nothing in the community sidebar or pinned posts on what Racoon actually offers/what you focus on to stand out.

On to an actual question: Besides the cute name, what made you want to create Raccoon?

Mainly two reasons:

  • I wanted to test Kotlin Multiplatform and its ecosystem on a "real world project"
  • back in mid-2023, Lemmy apps were incomplete and I did not find any which had all the right things in the right place for my taste, but the ones I liked the most were either closed source or used languages I am not an expert in so I couldn't contribute to them.

Additionally I wanted to create a project where people could participate, ask for features, configure the app as they wished and engage in discussions freely.

Maybe I should update the sidebar with the list of features and the target of the project.

EDIT: sidebar updated 😉

This may have been asked and answered a bunch of times already, I don't follow the project closely-

Is racoon for Lemmy associated with racoon for Friendica? I saw a comment that led me to belive they may be now completely separate projects

Hope you're having a lovely day :)

Yes they are separate projects, two completely independent apps. But they are maintained by the same people (person) and are built on similar tech stacks, although not entirely equal.

Raccoon for Lemmy is the oldest one (and most feature rich) and is a Lemmy client, Raccoon for Friendica is a Friendica/Mastodon client born as a "spinoff" but focusing more on social interactions rather than news aggregation.

Friendica needed a mobile client, I thought to leverage what I had learned doing the Lemmy app to create one.

I don't use raccoon yet, and I do like the slashed zero being the default font. I use photon.lemmy.world on desktop - mainly for the separate up/downvotes, is there an option to separate them on raccoon?

Yes, there in a "Vote format" option in the "Content appearance" screen, which you can access from the main Settings page.

Settings > Content Appearance > Vote format > Separate

Sorry, I know this AMA is a few months old but there's no more recent one.

Just wondering if there will be support for custom emojis in the comments, like Hexbear's emojis? I don't mean an emoji selector, I just mean being able to see them properly. They are mostly not loading or loading in a really broken way. I previously used Eternity and they all showed up perfectly, not sure what the difference or issue is though.

I just started using this recently and I'm really enjoying it. Thanks!

I am sorry, there have always been issues, especially with animated ones, I'll investigate into it more when I have a little time.

No worries, nothing to apologize for. I am really enjoying the app! Thank you so much for your work on it!
