Anti-Corporate Movement

This community is the first one on lemmy of its kind. It sits between the idea of anarchism/anti-capitalism and left leaning economic policy.

Our goal is to make people aware of the dangers of corporate control, its influence on governments and people as well as the small but steady abrasion of empathy around the world indirectly caused by it.

Current topics this includes but is not limited to:

Feel free to debate this but beware, corporate rhetoric is not welcome here. If you have arguments, bring them on. If its rhetoric trying to defend the evil actions of corporations, we will know and you will go.

Our declared goal so far is to have all companies and individuals worldwide capped at 999 mil USD in all assets, including ownership of other companies, sister companies and marital assets. The reason for this is that companies (and individuals) are not supposed to resemble small(?) countries with a single leader(-board) and shareholder primacy. Thats why we feel like they must be kept in check indefinitely.

But companies will just wander off The argument that large companies will just wander off is valid, which we embrace. We dont need microsoft, apple, google, amazon and other trillion dollar companies. There are small competitors being kept small and driven into brankruptcy by anti competitive behavior of these giants or simply bought up and closed. If starbucks left tomorrow, we would not have an issue with this.

But then we have x little microsofts that all belong to the same person(s) If in fact nobody was allowed to accumulate more than 999 mil in assets, they would not be able to own all these. And like defending agains burglary, it is not about complete defence but time and effort. You only have to keep the thief occupied long enough for them to be caught, give up or make a mistake.

But these giants have tons of IP which would then limit our growth Thats another topic we must touch on. We will (only this one time) take a page out of russias playbook and demand that IP of non complying companies (assets over 999 mil USD) will be declared invalid, which opens them up to be copied.

But then they will "live" in one country that doesnt accept this Correct, and they should be taken into custody the moment they enter the airspace of a country that supports this act.

My brother posted his amateur edm music and almost immediately had it stolen by a large music corp and then got content id flagged. Its pretty clear IP laws are written by thieves to protect their stolen goods.

That is my favorite description of IP laws yet. Thank you!

Yes, indeed! I will steal this as well! :) but besides that. We need numbers to change things in the world. Meaning that 100 1000 or 10000 people visiting the rich and famous at home and demanding their freedom back will change things.

This community is made by the people for the people and we ask everyone to share ideas, speak up and push for change.

Before anyone argues that its pointless, then you should please go work for 7 days a week, dont vote as a woman and many other things that were achieved through collective struggle. Its does work. The elite profits from you believing it doesnt.

Also quick reminder: its against the rules of this community to reinforce the tale that struggle and collective action does not help.

YouTube's copyright approach is fucking terrible. There's that Tom Scott video where he says YouTube's copyright isn't broken, the law is, and the main point he's trying to make is a good one, but he neglects to address the ways that YouTube specifically is broken.

Everything about Content ID is stuff they have voluntarily done above and beyond what the law requires. And Content ID makes no allowances for fair use and does not penalise false claims in any way. But worse, there are regular abuses of content ID for things that are not even under copyright at all. I've had videos of me performing Beethoven's scores receive content ID claims, despite the composition bring public domain and the recording being entirely my own copyright. And you regularly hear stories of people using NASA footage (which is public domain) or other content that's public domain by law get claimed by news organisations that had also used the same NASA footage and claimed it as theirs. Again, YouTube just lets them do this. Nothing about copyright law requires them to.

I regret reading the youtube comments. What a cesspool.

Anyway, I think that he did the right thing here, exposing the issue without putting his arse behind a legal battle. A judiciary system is part of a government, and a government is not made for the population, it's made to ensure the continued control of a ruling class over it. Under capitalism this means that the law will typically side with corporations against random nobodies like him.

Its arguably correct as of this point in time but the situation has gotten worse in the last few decades and up until now there is no real reason to see it getting any better. There are efforts though.

However, this is exactly what this community is for. We push and ask for the elites to be dismantled. We cant change stuff without help. Either by posting, funding or discussing ideas.

So please consider doing any of the above so we can rid the world of the cancer that are billionaires.

I should have clarified that I was focusing on an individual level.

On a collective level it's exactly like you said, we [people in general] need to organise ourselves and get rid of this cancer.

I agree that there is no use in burning yourself out by fighting legal battles alone, against a huge enemy that does not play by the same rules as you do.

I do however want to warn against uncritically stating that this is the system we‘re in because it can give the impression that this is not changeable.

It is changeable and it has been changed, many times. But we need to understand that this does not work passively by believing it will. We all are needed. We need to encourage speaking up, rallying, even punishing this behavior by an means necessary.
