About 20 days ago, I had made a blog post about an idea I had for a better federated search engine model.

It didn't take much time for it to develop into a thing I am fixated on.

I am putting the code out, its not ready or working, but it is something I am really happy to make and has filled my time with joy designing.

My current plan is the following:

  1. Get the basic web-ring creation process down
  2. Get scraping jobs functional
  3. Provide a basic query system
  4. Implement basic user accounts
  5. Implement basic federation
  6. Implement basic moderation

Once I am done with the core features that I have in mind, I will start working on adding more features and quality of life improvements.

Some features I want to work on to make this software more enticing to administrators:

  1. The ability to customize what is publicly accessible.
  2. The ability to edit the pages HTML style on the fly, without having to recompile.
  3. Containers for easy deployment.

In regards to application design, I am taking pages from my book in developing Android applications, along with cherry-picking from projects @[email protected] made.

  1. MVC design, with static pages to provide the fastest loading experience for users
  2. Bootstrap to make the pages responsive for any device
  3. Diesel to abstract database interaction and migration.
  4. Handlebars for view templating
  5. Axum as the HTTP core

Hopefully these design decisions make my application as debt free as possible.

If you have any advice or suggestion, please do give, I want to know how I can do better or avoid common pitfalls for newcomers!

If you have criticisms, please be constructive and have empathy towards the fact of me doing this because it makes me happy.

As an autistic person with huge amounts of trauma, I fully agree and think extreme responses are the way to go.

The idea of always staying constructive, even in the face of eg science denial (which proves that diverse workforces are much more efficient than white male dominated ones) is idealizing human nature and brought us to this mess. It is called the tolerance paradox and you can read it on wikipedia.

I would definitely go with „we will not hire any white cis males anymore“ and make a whole foundation for extreme humanist moves. You could also go for „we wont hire people with more than x privilege points“ where you add up things like wealth, education, gender etc to gauge if someone „needs this job“.

Become a radical humanist! (Btw. I can see this extended for animal rights later but lets unify here first) and no, i‘m not joking.

I know this is going to backfire: gamepass is convenient but every person subscribing fuels the toxic „rentseeking culture“ of capitalists worldwide. Some would say that its much better to pirate than to use this shit. Besides: it is technologically subpar and surely privacy invasive.

This is as inspiring as it is terrifying.

I would also be very interested. :)

Yikes! We have a live one.

Apple is breaking international law with their software. I suggest you start reading about it and not accuse others of ideology without having any idea what you‘re talking about.

Edit: another bot. 130 comments, zero posts. Thats the third one in as many days after two years of silence. Zuck is running interference it seems.

Wonderful. You can just make a different frontend for any of these platforms.

Thats the beauty of open source. The protocol is open, the backend is open, the frontend is open.

Example: you go and find 10 friends and decide you want this to happen. Everyone takes 100 coins (whatever your currency is) and you post on the fedi for a dev that can make you a frontend similar to facebook for 1000 bucks initially. While developing, you see if more people want to use it and maybe get more cash so your app looks better in the end.

Done. You made your own. The end.

They said matrix, not element.

iMessage is crap as well. Its used to strengthen apples illegal monopoly. They are being sued for this.

Signal is pretty much the best for low tech users. Folks with more advanced knowledge and higher resilience expectations use matrix. Both have strong encryption and work on every device known to man.

I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt but since you‘re just trying to be a smartass and a jerk, you get the boot. Byee.

You wanted to sync passwords and keys. I suggested bitwarden. Its foss and works well even the hosting is free which I consider awesome.

Simple solutions being unnecessary expensive on apple is a feature, not a bug.

Yes i have used termius. It is okay but iphone is just crap for poweruser/admin work, period. I now use a postmarketOS phone for that which just runs linux.

Hi folks, I'm running a pi4 with rpiOS and had been using rdp to log into my pi that has no peripherals connected. I can still ssh in and I do have physical access but this kinda bothers me.

I know rpi connect is a thing but I'm not too comfortable using another "cloud service" to connect to something on my homenetwork from my homenetwork.

The rdp service does not seem to run anymore and I am unsure how to search for the culprit. I did search for a service resembling rdp on the journal but it doesnt turn up. what could be the correct service name?

Thanks for reading. have a good one.

The European Commission has asked X to hand over internal documents about its algorithms, as it steps up its investigation into whether Elon Musk’s social media platform has breached EU rules on content moderation.

The EU’s executive branch told the company it wanted to see internal documentation about its “recommender system”, which makes content suggestions to users, and any recent changes made to it, by 15 February.

X has been under investigation since December 2023 under the EU’s content law – known as the Digital Services Act (DSA) – over how it tackles the spread of illegal content and information manipulation. The company has been accused of manipulating the platform’s systems to give far-right posts and politicians greater visibility over other political groups.

Jack Dorsey, former CEO of Twitter, ousted board member of BlueSky, and grifter extraordinaire to the tune of a $5.6B net worth, is giving a keynote at FOSDEM.

Dorsey and his colleagues want to get us up to speed on what Block is working on these days. Allow me to give you a preview: in addition to posting $5B in revenue and a 21% increase in YoY profit in 2024, Jack Dorsey laid off 1,000 employees, ordering them not to publicly discuss board member Jay-Z’s contemporary sexual assault allegations on their way out, and announced a new bitcoin mining ASIC in collaboration with Core Scientific, who presumably installed them into their new 100MW Muskogee, OK bitcoin mining installation, proudly served by the Muskogee Generating Station fossil fuel power plant and its 11 million tons of annual CO2 emissions and an estimated 62 excess deaths in the local area due to pollution associated with the power plant. Nice.

Right now their page https://upgradefromwindows.com/ just redirects to https://www.fsf.org/windows which has a wall of text and an infographic. Even I, who doesn't have windows and will never reinstall it unless forced, clicked away from the page within 5 seconds. The FSF desperately needs help with marketing and design, plus it would be great to have tooling for brain-dead linux installation (no, find distribution, backup, put linux on a USB-stick, reboot, hit some button to get into the BIOS, select "USB stick", reboot, click through installation, find alternative software, is not brain-dead).

Hello infinitve wisdom of the fediverse!

Delving into the undepths of laptop manufacturers, I have recently found out that very few distinct manufacturers actually exist. A lot of laptops are just rebranded/whitelabeled.

Since I have not found an answer to my newest question on the search engine of my least distrust and I wont ever post on reddit again (which did come in handy for this stuff in the past), I ask you folks.

Captiva, a brand that seems to be sold by a lot of vendors, at least in germany, seems to be a subsidiary of ecom trading (a b2b seller for hardware that I use for work). They use the same chassis as schenker from what I can see.

I heard that some chinese vendor makes these but I think, since we have a more consumer oriented audience here, we might want to make it more transparent so people can make informed decisions instead of doubling the price of their hardware by it going through tons of hands.

P.S.: I took longer to search for a fitting community for this question than I took for writing it. If you know a better place to put this, pleas lmk. Thank you, have a great new year if you celebrate it.
