It was a rompy oceans 11 in space. Felt totally disconnected from star trek.
The nano being that could take over any computer system is a little overpowered for the story. So the stakes were not compelling.

The Ocean's comparison is spot on, minus the established charm.
Had I known of the Lilliputian's limitless plot breaking powers or his wiry Irish accent, might've pegged him for the traitor prior to viewing.
Section 31 in general should just not exist in Trek, let alone get a dedicated series or movie. It is the lest Trek thing in all of Trek canon.
It was fine as a one shot boogy man. It was even ok for it to be revived a few times as a ghost story or joke thing. But like you say, it’s the antithesis of trek and it makes no sense for people to keep trying to make trek stories around the least trek thing in trek canon. Sorta like making an entire trek series set in the mirror universe, just make your own IP and let trek be trek ffs.
It felt more like a Netflix knockoff Fast & Furious plot.
I was at least expecting a fun action movie but the choreography seemed weird and stilted, like they pieced it together from rehearsal footage. Also it was painfully obvious that the script everyone was reading at the start of the movie was dramatically different from the one they were reading at the end. Otherwise it was bland, inoffensive and uninteresting.
The action sequences:
Plot-wise, it was originally intended to be a miniseries. Explains the wild jumps and lack of character development. Kurtzman is hopefully on his way out.
Generically appealing, cookie cutter, storyboard by committee with just a touch of fan service... for that minty aftertaste.
I included Temple of Doom because of the barge chase scene. When I realized what it was, just couldn't help but throw my head back and laugh.
From the trailers leading up, I was trying to figure out who would be the requisite traitor. Was still undecided between Alok (augmented human from the Eugenics Wars) and Quasi (Chameliod not directly referenced since Wesley's fuzzy girlfriend). 2 strikes on that one.
Last note: Jamie Lee Curtis as the cybernetically enhanced human replacement for the maniacal AI. So, Control is now being used as a title á la Charlie of Charlie's Angels. Obvious sequel bait, though I find it exceedingly unlikely to occur at this point. Bonus points for her latching onto 2 huge stinkers in short succession. Borderlands... still haven't touched that one.

I don't think that's the same species.
Ah, my mistake. Confused them with Martia's species.
And now I'm reminded that this is Iman, the widow of David Bowie.
