Summary

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticized CDU leader Friedrich Merz for using far-right AfD votes to pass a border policy motion, breaking a longstanding political "firewall."

The move sparked nationwide protests, and Merkel said it was wrong to rely on AfD support.

Merz defended himself by blaming Merkel’s 2015 migration policies for AfD’s rise.

Merkel rejected this, arguing internal CDU-CSU conflicts helped AfD grow.

Guess what German conservative media is currently parroting (again):

Angela, I think you’re pretty cool

Well, of course Mutti is. But Mutti also represents 16 years of political standstill which is not so cool.

I know. I am currently reading her biography and it’s kinda tragic. Reminds me of Friedrich Ebert’s biography. Very idealistic, a symbol for the system, continuously (ab)used by the profiteers.

Still I admire her for a couple of sensible decisions, seemingly impossible under these conditions.

I just listened to an interview with her, and I think she might perhaps be starting to show some early signs of sort of being slightly more critical of her political work. But yeah, hindsight is 20/20, and she of course knows you can always do more if the stars all align.

Yeah, I mean she was always willing to learn

That's the problem. Doing nothing means not confronting anyone with change. As soon as a party tries changing anything now, the tractors block the streets or the rival parties tell crazy stories about your change....
