What did tramp mean back then?
It's referring to his homelessness, but there's not a good English word for what's really being expressed. He likes to wander freely in nature.
e: Vagabond. Pretty uncommon word though, I think.
hobo: someone who travels and works
bum: someone who doesnt travel nor work
tramp: someone who travels but doesnt work
i think those were the distinctions i read somewhere. all assume the person doesnt have permanent home.
