Follow-up question:

Do we still consider the cycles successful if they successfully... "connect" but they don't produce offspring?

If long protein chains have been exchanged I'd say it's a success

If you can think of a simpler way I'd like to hear it

I would equate "offspring" with "conduction of electricity" so no, that would not be considered successful if its only seated but not electrically connected.
