There is a difference between "European" and "EU". A software from UK is also not trustworthy as they are part of the five eyes spy coalition and totally are not giving EU users the protection they have inside of the EU. That also applies to other laws, customer protection and so on.
And in theory even russian gas is "buy european" and nothing good comes from buying that.
Confusingly this one is for European made products, not just EU.

I think the community has enough sense to not go crazy about "buy russian gas, is europe!".
I would love to get neat recommendations for British shoes and shortbread, and if people suggest British digital services I'm sure the good people of the comment section will give helpful feedback.
To be fair, we could just go to the EU one, I don't really care, as long as it's one rather than two or more.

!Buyeuropean is meant to be more encompassing as to include more regions such as the Balkans, Switzerland, Iceland, Andorra, Norway, Moldova, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Ukraine and the UK. I have offered to invite the !buyfromeu moderator to the the team however they have not responded.
We have tried to contact the mod of this community but they haven't been online / responsive since they went to sleep that one day when this was brought up. We wanted to discuss this.
And I get it, Russia is also European, but if we get into this argument people often forget that Switzerland, Norway, Iceland (to name a few countries) are not EU, and buyfromeu is not "EU/EEA/ETA" community. For example: we already have some nice posts recommending Ukrainian and Norwegian products.
Sunshine made the community before buyfromeu was made and we decided it's ok to have EU specific community if someone wants specifically EU (although I think the reddit community r/buyfromeu is actually more about EEA/ETA) and we decided to add it to our sidebar.
And while UK has the whole Five Eyes spying coalition we also have problems inside EU with certain governments of EU countries using software such as Pegasus to spy on fellow EU citizens / officials and pushing for Chat Control. The community is not only about software (even though Lemmy has a huge tech community and it looks like the discussion is always about tech). We also have posts about stickers, clothes, microcontrollers, etc. I don't trust Russian software at all but I also don't blindly trust every bit of software from inside EU. There are regulations but no checks at the same level EU has for e.g. Food and medicine and product materials.
Now before someone comes in to say something about software and privacy regulations: software inside EU is NOT as regulated as physical products. We've got pretty amazing things like GDPR but this pales in comparison to what kind of checks and responsibilities are put on manufacturers and importers to deal with. I personally want stricter regulation and checks for software. Storing data is not as a sensitive topic as e.g. how much your laptop is allowed to interfere with the signals of your phone.
Again, discussion is good, and would be awesome if buyfromeu mod would return to lemmy (hope they are ok) to discuss.

This one seems more focused on posting random European made products though, whereas the other seems more about discussion?
I noticed the same and am all for combining. I struggle with the multiple same posts across similar communities.
We can have multiple European sources and people can choose their likes themselves. Want to avoid UK because of 5 eyes, go for it. Not sure about this Sweden law around E2EE, take it into account.
I voted remain in Brexit and despite not being in the EU I see myself as European. Some of us in the UK are acting just the same way to consider our relationship with the US, and in recent years, I have moved to European suppliers (e.g. mailbox.org).
Thats how the fediverse works. you could have many communities of the type or even the same name on different instances.

Which is brought up repeatedly by people against the Fediverse and Lemmy for a reason not to come here. Having similar communities consolidated helps to defuse that.
This is not a case of [email protected] vs [email protected]. The two BuyEuropean communities look very similar, and the instances have similar moderation policies.
I mean, meh, reddit had duplicate subreddits a million times and still has. One eventually dominates, which will also probably happen here.
We don't have the user base that Reddit has.

I would suggest that [email protected] be the default as it is ran and hosted by actually vegans though the instance version is at 0.19.5 with [email protected] 0.19.9 a close second.
Everyone from Lemmy.ml, Hexbear.net and Lemmygrad.ml should consolidate into [email protected] 0.19.9.
This happens all the time. .org is a German-first instance, I believe, so that's a reason for the community to exist. Just cross-post.

Feddit.org has German and English speaking communities - if you check out their instance, communities like [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected] are among the most active there.
That's not really the point though. It's a maybe bit ironic to have the dominant "buy European" community hosted at feddit.uk, but I'm all for it. Would love to see them join forces.
