** Etymology 1**

From Proto-Finnic *rikki, of unknown further origin. Cognates include Ingrian rikki, Karelian rikki, Ludian rik (“sulfur, earwax”), Veps rik (“sulfur, rheum”) and Votic rittši. Germanic loan origin has been suggested (compare German Dreck), as well as indigenous derivation as rikka +‎ -i.
