If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

From CROW

When Nature Calls... Literally!

We have a very unusual #FreedomFriday for you today! Caring for wildlife isn't always glamorous, but at CROW, we're always up for the challenge!

Take this Eastern Screech Owl (25-298), for example. It found itself in a bit of a stinky predicament after getting stuck in a latrine at J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, covered in feces.

But don't worry, our team dove in (figuratively, not literally) to clean up the owl, provide some much- needed rest, and offer supportive care. After 4 days of TLC and a round of flight testing in an outdoor enclosure, this little owl was ready to spread its wings again!

Now, it's back in Ding Darling, flying free and clean...and hopefully staying away from mischief!

I wonder if they went with the Black Ice or New Car Smell...

The stink is probably the least of it for the owl. Owls don't really have much of a sense of smell. If it's some type of chemical toilet they get stuck in, there is a lot of potential damage to the feathers/skin, and of course parasites/bacteria. I'm really glad they were able to save this little one!

Is this on Sanibel Island?

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yes it is. The clinic is there, along with the area this owl was found in.

It looks lovely from the photos! It's looking like I may be headed to the Tampa area late this year (hoping to see some wild burrowing owls!) so maybe I can check out Sanibel too!

ah shit they caught Dirt_Owl

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

I am unsure if Dirt_Owl is a person or a thing. I tried looking it up, but that made me more confused. πŸ€”
