Hey folks,

The next update to Shattered Pixel Dungeon will make some pretty big changes to the Warrior. His current shielding over time benefit is passive and hard to notice, so I'm changing it to grant him a bunch of shielding up-front, with a cooldown.

I'm toying with some of the balance on this atm, but would also like to add a bit of interactivity to this by having it only trigger when the Warrior is about to be below half health. This gives me room to make the effect stronger, in exchange for the extra requirement on its use.

(Image Description: A short GIF of the Warrior taking damage early in the game. Just before the incoming damage from the rat is dealt, The Warrior gains a burst of 5 sheilding, completely negating the attack. The Warrior then starts to retaliate and defeats the rat.)

What happens if you’re already below half health when you get hit and the shield is off cooldown? Does it still work or do you need to heal back above half health to be able to use it?

If it no longer works when you’re below half health then it would be a big nerf to high challenge characters low on food or Berserkers who play with low health perhaps to take advantage of a ring of tenacity or a weapon of vampirism.

The shield triggers if the Warrior will be at or below half HP when the incoming damage resolves, even if he was below half health already. It triggers on any damage source that can be absorbed by shielding (i.e. anything but hunger).

Oh okay that’s really smart then! Cool!

Interesting 🤔

Will the shield still be permanent?

One of the things I wanted to move away from is the shield basically just being healing, so no the shield doesn't persist forever. Once you're out of combat it'll fade, but you will get some cooldown refunded based on unused shield.

Ooou, I like that, that's really good

I know we are close to the updates so I don't want to ask too many questions, but I am wondering, how will interact with instant shielding abilities like the Gladiator's lethal defense and Liquid willpower? The fading effect will slightly nerf those

At the moment I just have them grant a higher quantity of regular barrier, but that feels a bit boring so I'm considering giving them a cooldown reduction benefit for the new seal shielding.

I see, thank you for the answer 😌

I'm curious what people think of the potential change.

Personally, even if the shielding is chunky, it'd still be a nerf to me. The current passive shield is useful at any health level, synergizing with a defensive build. The proposed change seems less useful.

All else being equal yes this is absolutely a nerf, which is why the shielding is being made a lot more generous. At base you'll get 5 shielding with a 100 turn cooldown, which is already 20 turns per shield at best, as opposed to the current Warrior's static 30. With T5 armor and Iron will this can go up to 15 shielding, effectively meaning 6.7 turns per shield. These numbers aren't final though, of course, and obviously you are not going to be getting this shield as max effectiveness, but the idea here is if you play around it you're going to get a lot more effective points of shielding than the old system which had 0 interaction.

why did you stop posting on reddit?

A post he made awhile back is pertinent so I'll quote the relevant part.

Leaving Reddit (and twitter) was never about shutting myself out, it’s entirely because those platforms are run by vile people and I can’t stand to use them anymore. Back in the early days Reddit was 100% of my community interaction, and I admit I do miss participating in big discussion threads there, but these days the majority of my communication time is through direct messages (mainly email) and that’s been the case for years.
