Took me a while and an AskLemmy post to figure this out, since I initially thought Lemmy was auto-modding commenters (which kinda made me panic), but this is what I see:
I am the only mod in this community, and others aren’t seeing this flag everywhere, so commenters aren’t actually modded.
Is this a bug with Voyager or with my instance?
Someone just told me these shields mean I’m a mod and can interact with these posts, but that’s not what it meant to me. To me, it means ‘this user is a mod’, which was super confusing.
I’d instead color the edit menu ellipsis green, not add a shield.
Those tags, like this shield, convey information about the user’s status, not what I can do. The ellipsis tells me what I can do.
Hey, thanks for the post. On Voyager, there is no moderator badge. Instead, the username color changes. give yourself a bit of time to get used to it, maybe you’ll end up liking it. :-)
I like it if I’m doing a global search or viewing all or home and one of a posts from the communities that I moderate shows up, then I know that I can moderate it quickly at a glance.
In addition, for admins, both local and remote it changes to red with or without a checkmark inside of the shield as a signal on what actions can be performed by admins on a given piece of content. So it’s a bit more complex than just showing if you can moderate a given post or comment.

It’s not a username colour – that would be ideal. It’s a green shield badge.

I have no idea what you mean by this. We were talking about username colours, and that made sense, though I haven’t seen that. Now we’re on checkmarks, which I see, but doesn’t make sense. Does that make sense?
What I mean is your username will be green if you distinguish your comment so that others know you’re a moderator.
Voyager doesn’t show users that you’re a moderator unless you explicitly distinguish your comment, to allow you to interact without asserting yourself.

I still don’t understand all the green shields after every commenter’s name, though.
It’s essentially a shortcut button, that’s all. And show you what actions you can take at a glance on an arbitrary piece of user generated content.
I think the mod action button should be more similar to the default layout icon from the web UI.
It's not going to change, sorry. This is the way Apollo has done it and I really enjoy its UX. For new Voyager mods, I recommend giving it time to get used to it.
That’s cool, and I was amongst the biggest Apollo fangirls on the planet, but just because Apollo jumped off a cliff doesn’t mean you have to.
This particular bit of design is not ideal.
I’ve been designing UIs on iOS, Mac, and Windows for decades, and this is confusing.
e: especially for newish users, who we’re trying to attract to Lemmy, right?
New Lemmy users aren’t mods usually, so they won’t see this UI element. In any case though, I like this UI 😉
