I haven't ridden one of those in a long, long time, but I never tried to fix it. I just kind of figured it was one of its quirks. I'm interested in seeing if anyone has an answer.

Looks like it was a mixture issue. When I swapped the jets before, I had some old foam filter on it and an open header (previous owner cut it unfortunately). Now it has a go kart muffler and a proper cone filter, so I decided to mess with the jets again when I found some spare time today. It easily hits 55 MPH now and doesn't pop as much. Going to do some fine tuning this weekend.
