Me: Hi, I need some high quality components, you know better than office stuff, and I'm willing to pay a premium. Company: Great, we have a huge range. And as a bonus we've covered EVERYTHING in LEDs! Me: Err, can I get the good mechanical switches and silent fans without LEDs? Company: Ooh, that's a SPECIAL item! 3x the price!

If anything, that's just distracting from the game on the screen.

If you have a keyboard that works with a major manufacturer's software, some games have themed color schemes that change in-game to match the game scene you're in.

I'm aware of that, but it sounds even more distracting.

I guess if you're playing in a completely dark room, sometimes it's nice to be able to see the keys by being backlit. I can type the alphabet stuff without looking easily, and most game control keys, but sometimes there are keys you don't use very often where you kind of want to look to see if you're hitting the right key. Having a pure white backlight isn't always great in the dark, and having a bright rainbow isn't always great either. Having the colors match the color scheme of what's on your screen, again, completely unnecessary, but I can still see my keys and it matches the vibe. I've also only used it a handful of times.

Me, a 41 year old: .......but why?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago

Because they can? It's kinda cool if you're in a dark or dimly lit room. Obviously unnecessary. I have used it a few times on my desktop but most of my favorite games don't have it supported. I also use a gaming laptop for my work because I do some video editing and it overall has good specs. But I don't even have the RGB turned on for it, it's just a work laptop to me.

I think the switches are the most important part then the caps but I do wish I had soldered in the LEDs when I was building my board for home sometimes

Stop buying Gamer stuff when you want something better than cheap office stuff

I bought myself an epomaker ajazz ak 820 for like 50€ (70€ with tax and import fees) a week ago and its better than any of my 150€ Gaming keyboards until now

That's pretty much the only thing I hate about my desktop keyboard. Absolutely not a fan of RGB lighting because it's just wasteful and probably drains more resources than it's worth.

I need all the resources in the world so if I ever end up with a better desktop I can run such obviously resource intensive games such as Dungeon Clawler at maximum efficiency.

Do you have to run the keyboard's software?

I have a Corsair K100 and it does all the normal keyboard stuff without any software even installed on my machine. Also, the RGB lighting can run from on-device memory, which is super nice.

Same for Wooting. You can also configure it through a web-app

I don't think I have any of the optional software installed, I'm pretty sure, but all the keys naturally light up. I don't remember what brand or what exact model I have, but I have the lights on the lowest setting possible so they don't distract me.
