I recently setup a new instance and have federation enabled. I tested with the curl command and its returning a proper JSON response. How long does it typically take for an instance to start federating with others?

It should happen right away. Have you subscribed to any communities?

It took a few hours but the more people started using the instance the faster items started to get populated.

Once you or your users begin subscribing to remote content

It's pretty quick once you start subbing to some remote communities. Starts going faster once you post some

while logged into your new instance have you searched for communities on other instances? That seemed to jump-start the process on my instance. You can also check the "instances" link on the bottom of the page to see what other instances you're federated with.

Yes i started doing this and the instances have solely been growing. Just took longer than i had originally anticipated

AFAIK you need to manually search for another instance's community from your instance to start federating, that's what it says in the documentation https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/administration/federation_getting_started.html

But I'm also having issues with this, I made this post https://lemmy.one/post/16124
