when spritely will be done and have a frontend or will be integrated into pleroma or mastodon it will have totally different privacy implications. If that is what you are looking for :)

If I understand correctly they would be able to have totally different sharing modes, like sharing only to friends of friends or things like that.

Yes, Spritely Project by ActivityPub co-author Christopher Lemmer Webber will be a wonderful development for the Fediverse. That is IFF there's broad adoption of what he's creating. This is a worry for Chris, as the fedi is fragmenting and app developers go their own non-standard directions, making interoperability ever harder. At the same time developments outside of fedi (other decentralized initiatives, and bad old Big Tech) may also overtake us. Chris, and by extension the SocialHub community - where we focus on open standards and interoperability - need all the help we can get, to keep fedi relevant, healthy and slowly growing.

exactly like it says. encrypted by default, more control over what posts federate and maybe an unfederated (encrypted) account until accepted a follow request. which some need for a friends-only instance. or a family only one.

Doesn't what you descript already exist? Mastodon does all of this.

Besides, the Fediverse and ActivityPub is particularly a social network. It's basically a web of json-ld documents. I expect my posts and data to federate across the entire network for the Fediverse to see, as long as I set my audience to such per post. This is already way better than Facebook, for example, which actively non-consensually scans my phone for contacts, tracks my location 24/7, etc.

Usually, people asking for privacy on social networks confuse privacy with anonymity or pseudonymity, which is an actual problem. Is this what you mean?

Maybe more options can help like diaspora but yes I'm particularly talking about privacy. not anonymity.

the privacy options specifically what I meant is choosing which group of people to see which posts. while others can't see it. this can help for people who want to just run one account to post things on seperate groups without using a "second" private account for friends.

Maybe Zap? Even has optional e2ee messages with in browser crypto. Hubzilla as well, but Zap is more focussed on private communication.

Edit: Using it's own Zot6/Nomad protocol. ActivityPub isn't really designed with privacy in mind.

something without AP I guess?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 years ago

Both can do AP, but to have increased privacy it is better to communicate via the Zot6 protocol I think.

is there any privacy benefits in comparison with other platforms?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 years ago (1 children)

Yes, you're using a privacy focused platform and if you want to publish information publicly you can post on the fediverse. Out if curiosity what do you mean by privacy and also social media? A closed network?

maybe a closed network that can federate so I can add more servers around the world. every message and posts is encrypted and only people that are invited can see.

this is great for someone that want to surround himself with special people. also families, businesses, and journalists.

Sounds like you want HumHub.org with federation support
