Yeah, transactional email service for password resets and message notifications isn't free. I'm all for paying a few USD a month; paying that now saves future me the hassle of having to find a new instance to join if this one goes down due to lack of funds.
one of the things I used to love about my something awful account was that it wasn't free. It was $10 one-time, which is a pittance if you use it to any significant degree but it pays for stuff like automailers and other necessary admin shit and it raises the stakes of being a jerk.
But forcing pay is not the way to make a platform grow. People will see a price on the internet and ignore it, unless something else (ad, suggesstion...) really tells you how good it is
Also, payment systems are better these days but there are still a lot of people who would have the money but no way to transfer it for one reason or another.
Some sort of good, free level of service is good to have in most cases.

Thanks. As an upside, Lemmy is decentralized so anyone from other instances can participate in discussions here. Can't imagine how stressed I would be, if this was a centralized platform.
Just out of curiosity, did you need to upgrade the server from the huge influx of new users, or does it still hold up? (You're a bless for us! ^^)
Had to do several adjustments without rescaling, and there hasn't been any downtime today. Feels weird really!
Hmm glad to hear that. Just inform us bravely, whenever that pocket money cost will shoot above your spending threshold.
Currently there is no need to worry, the monthly costs with Sopuli are still within pocket change.
Are you able to get some income via ads or such? I am new to Lemmy so still figuring it out. Moving from third party Reddit app that had some ads. Add that I were not obtrusive but paid there developer for his time. Feel if you can't monetize your services to some degree, will be difficult for people like you to maintain your servers as they grow so how there is some way to make it worth it.

Thank you for running this instance! It seems Reddit is going to continue to "digg" their own grave (hehe) so the users are going to continue to increase. We're definitely going to see another spike when they kill the API at the end of the month. As others have said, please setup a Patreon or something such so we can setup monthly donations. You're running the server, we should be the ones paying for it AND your time!

Hyvä puoli tässä toki on, että Lemmy on hajautettu alusta, ja keskusteluihin Sopulissa voi osallistua myös muiden instanssien kautta. Jos kyse olisi keskitetystä alustasta, en edes halua kuvitella kuinka paljon olisin silloin stressaantunut.
Teknistä apua varmaan löytyy vähän sieltä ja täältä jos on tarpeen, minä mukaanlukien. Ei muutakuin rohkeasti viestiä jos on jotain spesifiä osaamista/kapasiteettia minkä kanssa voisi olla avuksi.
Itseasiassa ratkon ongelmaa jo muutamien tyyppien kanssa Matrixissa. Tosin tänä iltana ongelmaa ei ratkaista, on muita juttuja hoidettavana.
xyz voi olla hankala TLD, olen lukenut että Google ja MS ainakin tuppaa herkästi laittamaan roskapostiin vaikka kaikki olisi muuten kunnossa.

Ihmekös tuo, kun ovat niin halpoja. Ostin joskus vitsinä muutaman namecheapista noin 0.2€/vuosi.
Itsellä ollu xyz domaini parisen vuotta ja ensimmäinen vuosi oli todella halpa mutta kyllä se hinta nousee hieman sen jälkeen. Viimeksi näköjään maksoin 14$/vuosi.

I registered 9 days ago and didn't get the email. Today still no email so couldn't log in, but password recovery worked! Thought I'd share if someone else is in the same boat and checks in here.
e: Still couldn't login because the email wasn't verified. Changed my email in settings, got verified and now it works. (You can use the same email with a + alias like this: address@example.com -> address+whatever@example.com)
