Some people will say to oil the pole, but don't oil the pole. Birds fly into poles and it's not a big deal. But if they fly into an oiled pole, the oil gets on their wings, and they can't clean it and it's bad for the birds. Thanks for listening.

We had hoped the slinky would keep the squirrels from climbing the pole but it hardly slowed them down at all

Edit: dont do this evidently

when vaseline gets on a bird's feathers, it can prevent them from flying or insulating themselves properly. the bird can also ingest vaseline -making them sick. don't use vaseline jelly to grease a bird feeding pole.

I checked a bunch of other sources included the one you quoted, and it seems like there isnt really a confirmed answer, but the general unconfirmed answer is that you are correct.

Birds can eat vasoline in low doses and it is sometimes intentionally used to help them with certain issues. However, getting it on their feathers does generally seem to be bad. Thanks for letting me know, ill edit my comment to reflect that its a bad idea.
