It's a bit strange but professional sport is extremely meritocratic at the player level (coaching and staffing is another matter) so it's very unlikely that there's any ill intent here.
People commenting clearly just read headlines.
Token player? GTF! If that team is winning don't change it because of diversity.
No where does anyone mention anything about token players.
It's about doing more at grassroots level to get girls from diverse backgrounds involved.
