Old heads love Pele

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

To be fair, Pelé was very clearly against contraceptives, right up the Vatican's alley with that one.

Messi is the best of this era. Maradona was the best of his era. Same way, Pele was the best of his era. Very difficult to compare between eras in any meaningful way. Looking at the actual output in terms of statistics and trophies won, Messi is number one, but then you may ask what if Pele and Maradona had the same facilities as Messi, the same advanced fitness regimes, better healthcare, better pitches, safer rules - what could have they achieved?

Maradona on his meeting with John Paul II

"Yes, I did argue with the Pope. I argued with him because I've been to the Vatican and seen the gold ceilings. And then I hear the Pope saying that the Church was concerned about poor kids. So? Sell the ceilings, mate! Do something!"

From Yo Soy el Diego

But he was optimistic about Bergoglio

“The Vatican, for me, is a lie because instead of giving to people it takes away. All popes have done this and I don’t want him to do it,”

“I am disappointed with the Vatican but I believe in you because you are making changes and pointing us towards more human things, things that I would like to see in the Church,”

Does he? The Catholic Church is already the largest non-gov healthcare provider and charity organization in the world.

They’re donating a lot of organs, that’s for sure.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

Are you really arguing the church should tear apart the ceilings of their historical buildings to sell the materials?

Ironically he was always a big supporter of civil and economic rights. Wasn't a good guy by any means, but his persona always overshadowed his social activities and his protests, especially during the 2000s. He was also outspoken and openly politically aligned, which is part of the reason why he's such a controversial figure here in Argentina

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

Disappointed he didn't choose Jesus. Been in good form recently.

Pele used to have to do what he did with the opposition kicking the living shite out of him. Different game back then, the added brutality counts in his favour.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

La Liga and SA have been kicking the shit out of Messi for 2 decades...

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

If you actually think that what we have nowadays compares to the absurd brutality of football back them, then that means you have no idea what you are talking about lol

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

Conservative old man says things were better in his day. Shocking.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

We get it, you’re old as fuck.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

A diplomatic answer since Ronaldo and Messi are both still alive.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

Maradona isn’t though

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

can the pope tell us what maradona is doing down under

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

He was just scared of the reaction from the Cristiano stans brigade.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

I’m with the Pope.
