It's very difficult to want to keep coming back to lemmy with so many communities I'm not interested being on my homepage. I want to be able to discover new communities and posts but have the ability to block certain communities I never want to see

Subscribe to the communities you want to see, and only look at those with the "Subscribed" filter at the top of the home page.

Edit: You can also set the type default to Subscribed on your profile.

I know I can do that thats not what I want though. I want to be able to browse all communities to find new ones but block the ones I know I'm not interested in

I know, a number of us do, but it's the only solution right now. When you want to explore, hold your nose and look at All.

Beat me to it, that's what blocking is for

this gets asked very often, yet there is no updated priority for that feature. sad.

Configure your settings to bring you to your "Subscribed" feed by default

There is but it's not easy. I'm using uBlock Origin's filters to hide content in different websites and forums. For instance, this filter hides content from blocked users in that forum: www.kaminata.net##.post.has-profile:has([id^="post_hidden"][class="ignore"]) But as I said, it's difficult to do it on your own. In order to have this filter I asked in uBlock Origin's reddit and they gave me the filter. You'll have to ask them to register here on lemmy.ml for them to see how it works in order to give you a working filter.
