Geography is just physics slowed down, with a couple of trees stuck in it. - Terry Pratchett

Notice Board

Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments. Geographers explore both the physical properties of Earth’s surface and the human societies spread across it. They also examine how human culture interacts with the natural environment and the way that locations and places can have an impact on people. Geography seeks to understand where things are found, why they are there, and how they develop and change over time. Read more...

Even if they figure out how to prevent damage from EMPs, power companies and home owners won't bother implementing them.

In 1989, Hydro Quebec was told by its engineerings to lower the voltage to prevent damage from a geomagnetic storms from the sun. Management said no. This happened https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_1989_geomagnetic_storm

They were also told how to prevent it with a few modifications. That got vetoed too. Next solar flair or near miss CME, we are all going back to 1930.

Do you have any data regarding the lowering the voltage to prevent damage? Whether from this instance or in general. I'm an electrical engineer and would love to see that.

Alas, the voltage thing was something I was told in the 2000s. I couldn't find any references in a quick search

Well, thanks anyway.
