Great comment. Trump won and the amount of people here throwing the Nazi word around still don't realise how self defeating they are.

You can't tell someone their an idiot or evil and then expect them to try seeing things your way, you're much more likely to end up entrenching their beliefs. The goal should be to win them over, that won't be accomplished by telling them how wrong and stupid they are.

Engage, don't alienate, no matter how hard that feels at times.

I'd be getting bored if it was an echo chamber of any flavour.

As I've said in other comments, I'm here to learn and part of that means exposing myself to people that do not think alike to me. I'm not hear to circle jerk about how right we are, maybe that was fun the first few thousand times, it's just boring now.

Ideally I'd like to get involved with a broad spectrum of people that somewhat represent the society that we live in.

Maybe I should just get offline and go to the pub.

It's extremely big headed to think that only the people who agree with you are arguing honestly and have not based their arguments on any incorrect information.

I'm here to learn and grow, not to circle jerk with my friends about how right we are.

In the UK there is some similarity between liberal and left wing ideas, despite them being distinct political groups. Liberalism was originally seen as very left wing, a lot of people are now arguing that there is more in common with right wing politics, small state and such.

I'd say my experience here has been much more left wing than liberal though, just my opinion.

Thanks for this. Will definitely check out those instances.

Since Trump, I'm finding the Lemmy.world experience to be increasingly akin to an echo chamber and it's quite frankly starting to bore me. (Inb4, I'm a left winger and I don't like Trump, but I'm much more interested in a good spirited debate or novel points of view than I am in Orange man bad Nazi circle jerks)

If I wanted the same repetitive comments to be upvoted and any different opinion at all to be downvoted and even blocked/banned, I'd have just stayed on Reddit.

Are there any instances where different, opposing and novel points of view are celebrated and debated rather than simply derided and downvoted?

But I want Google to stick it to bad orange man, Google should represent me not official data, Google is a Nazi company!!! 😭😭😭

Whilst I see where you're coming from, is there literally anything for Google to gain by being a stick in the mud over the issue? It'll probably get changed back in a few years time.

The redness in your cheeks when cold is due to increased blood flow trying to keep your skin warm, I take it that they return to normal when you warm up? I don't think a specific moisturizer can really help with this.

You could try a balaclava if your red cheeks are really bothering you.

Wow, that's quite something! You may have possibly noticed other benefits though? Maybe being less short of breath, your back is less sore, maybe a lower blood pressure or cholesterol at a medical? There's many things you can notice other than your appearance in a mirror.

40lbs is a great achievement and I hope you didn't find it to be an absolutely pointless exercise.

The first day you lift is the day you realise that you'll never be able to lift enough!

I fully understand the man is controversial to say the least, I'm not a huge fan myself, but I think that if he was legitimately a Nazi, that he's smart enough to not outright advertise it.

Socially awkward, autistic, right winger - Yes

Literally a Nazi - No

Bring on the downvotes 🤣

My dad always likes to tell us about the Christmas when my uncle bought my aunt a tin opener (a good one!) for Christmas, she was apparently rather unimpressed but the story has given years worth of good laughs.

I also remember when my dad bought a holiday in New York for my mum and himself for Christmas, but the tickets were in a small envelope right at the bottom of a HUGE box filled with packing peanuts.

What terrible/joke presents can you think of that would be a good laugh on Christmas day?

I understand why he is unpopular with many people and to be frank I have quite the distaste for all billionaires, but he is not stupid which is something that is often claimed.

No-one becomes a multi-billionaire due to a lack of intelligence or common sense.

Musk knows exactly what he is doing, he didn't buy Twitter to make a quick buck, he bought it derail it and he's done that quite thoroughly. $35bn to Musk is pocket change.

I mean I get it, if I was a big Twitter user and a new CEO made it something that I now hated, I'd think the bloke was an idiot, but that is actually just a difference of opinion and has nothing to do with intelligence.

In short, whilst Musk is clearly very unpopular with some people and I can understand why, the man clearly is not an idiot. Some people really don't like it when you tell them that.

Edit: 14 downvotes in 30 minutes lol, I can't say I wasn't expecting this but judging by the replies so far, I think it just proves that it's an unpopular opinion!

I'm looking for inspiration! She wants to go on a holiday at some point during the year as a gift, but I really want to give her something on Christmas day.

The weather has finally warmed up here and now there plenty of super annoying houseflies. They're way to fast to swat and have an annoying habit of landing on you.

I've tried Google's suggestion of water/vinegar and a bit of dish soap in a bottle, but they don't seem to go for it at all.

I'm up for trying anything, please make suggestions!

Edit: Thank you to all for your suggestions. So far I've tried the idea of spraying them with surface cleaner which appears to work well
