There are conflicting reports about whether or not the staffing was normal when it happened, but it wouldn’t shock me at all if staffing was an issue just because it’s been an ongoing issue in the US in general for years. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this happened after Trump was inaugurated and not before, but given DC airspace it’s possible this was a bomb waiting to go off anyway.

No audio right now so I can’t watch the video, but if she hasn’t already done so please pass on to your friend that the ACLU is asking people who have experienced discrimination due to the new executive orders to contact them. Link here.

Fundamentally, your question is “does it make me a bad person if I have done bad things?”, which is so complicated that people make entire philosophies and religions out of the answers to that, haha.

My view: you can be a good person who has done bad things, if you change your behavior and try to make amends. That doesn’t mean everyone has to accept or forgive you, but it’s a necessary part of being a good person.

They didn’t even learn anything from Dubya. Their answer to Bush was Clinton, not Obama. Obama was an unexpected primary winner thanks to people that were insanely enthusiastic about his platform, and healthcare reform coming into the public spotlight. The turnout he got was like nothing they’d been able to do before.

And what they took away from that was “wow, Obama was just a once in a generation charismatic speaker.” 🤦‍♂️ I look forward to the next round of being told how good the economy is!

Yeah, you know shit is fucked when eggs are over $8/dozen at Aldi!

In phase 3 clinical trials by the drugmaker, researchers looked at how well the drug worked after surgery. Patients who had undergone either tummy tucks or bunion surgery were given either suzetrigine every 12 hours; an opioid, hydrocodone, plus Tylenol every six hours; or a placebo for 48 hours after the operations.

[ . . . ]

The dose of hydrocodone was also smaller than what is typically given after surgery, “so it’s hard to know exactly what to make of the results,” Rind said.

🚩🚩🚩

I’m not saying this is 100% what it is, but if I wanted to make a less effective drug look more effective, then comparing its performance to a smaller than normal dose of an approved drug would be one way to do it.

If it’s actually effective then that’s great, there are people that need non-opiate alternatives. My worry is that it’s not and this is going to wind up being another way patients in acute pain get told to suck it up and deal by their doctors.

“Both pilots had flown this specific route before, at night. This wasn’t something new to either one of them,” said Jonathan Koziol, chief of staff for Army aviation. “Even the crew chief in the back has been in the unit for a very long time, very familiar with the area, very familiar with the routing structure.”

They’re saying that to imply that therefor they’re not at fault, but if anything routine makes you more likely to make mistakes. I’m sure the staffing problems didn’t help either. I guess we’ll see when the report comes out, if the black boxes survived.

They’re $8.75 for 12 at Aldi in CA. Or if you’re a real saver, 60 for under $45!

Lmao, okay, so now it isn’t a Nazi salute. In that case may I refer you to my initial comment: if you think it’s not a Nazi salute, go do it in Germany and see what happens.

You are making up excuses for the press and for Elon Musk’s actual Nazi salute based on a flawed understanding of what libel is. And you seem totally uninterested in the actual legal definition of libel as it pertains to public figures, how curious.

I do not engage with debate perverts so now that you have revealed yourself this is done.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 19 hours ago

It is one of my pet peeves. My grandma was the sweetest woman on earth, one of her go to phrases doesn’t deserve this one dimensional understanding! You can only have it as an insanely effective burn if it’s usually sincere! I will get up on a soapbox and bang pots and pans about this all day if I’m allowed, haha.

Yes, you said that, but it doesn’t make it true. The bar for libel is much higher for public figures, and it would have to be false that it was a Nazi salute for anyone to be found guilty of libel.

You cannot both say ‘no obviously I believe it was a Nazi salute’ and ‘nobody can call it a Nazi salute in the press because they’ll get sued for the crime of lying about someone.’

The whole article is worth reading, but to report rent gouging to the CA attorney general:

Fill out this form at the state attorney general’s website. The form isn’t anonymous; it asks for the information of the person reporting. There’s also a hotline you can call: 1 (800) 952-5225.

I got this email from the NHM:

For Our Community

We are holding all of you in our hearts during this devastating time for Los Angeles.

Based on the information we have now, we are pleased to offer free general admission at the Natural History Museum and La Brea Tar Pits & Museum through Friday, January 17. We hope our museums can serve as spaces of respite, offering comfort and connection with our natural and cultural worlds, while also providing enjoyable and engaging indoor experiences.

Please see our NHM and La Brea Tar Pits websites for more information and how to plan a visit.

In the wake of these devastating fires, we understand that many Los Angeles children are unable to attend school. In addition to the free educational experiences at our museums, we have collaborated with L.A. County Parks & Recreation to bring our Mobile Museums to community parks that are providing emergency youth camps this coming week. We are also welcoming many students from impacted communities to our museums for field trips.

The health and safety of our staff and visitors remains our top priority. We will continue to assess the situation day by day.

Did this scare the absolute shit out of anyone else? 😅

There are roughly 13,000 acres on fire within 20 miles of me (and about 10 million other people). Fortunately since I have asthma we already have 2 air purifiers that are running full blast.

Probably the scariest part of how toxic the air is right now is that it looks absolutely clear outside. Without checking the weather I would have never known it was that bad.
